We all know that we live in the 2020s (or later, depending on when you're reading this lmao). Man, what a time to be alive, right?
But many of us on this lovely site want to live like one would have in previous decades, which is super awesome. I can't really say much about other time periods, but I can tell you about how I choose to live my life as someone belonging to the grunge subculture.
Grunge began in the late 80s and was at its peak in the early 1990s. While that wasn't too long ago, quite a lot has changed! So, how do I do it? How do I get people telling me that I look like I'm from a 90s music video?
- Fashion. People belonging to the grunge subculture at the time often wore flannels and ill-fitting clothes that usually hid the shillouette. I personally like to wear really baggy clothes with a tight belt; this tends to accentuate my hips, but I don't care very much since I don't want my pants to be too far down. A jacket or flannel on top of whatever I'm wearing usually gets rid of the curve. On top of that, try to thrift instead of buying from a store! My nana likes to buy clothes for me, but I usually try to get my clothes through thrifting. DIY and cheaper clothes and accessories were ideal.
- Technology. I always find it silly when people try to tell you that you can't use modern technology because then you'd be a poser. That's just stupid. With that being said, though, I do reccommend trying to getting into the technology used at the time. I still use my phone and some social media (mainly to put my art out and keep in touch with my friends), but I also try to incorporate technology from the early '90s. At this point, cassettes were losing popularity as the CD came into the world. But that doesn't mean that people weren't jamming to cassettes or even vinyl! Record stores were still really popular. If you're planning to get vinyl and a record player, make sure to be careful with your equipment! it can be very fragile! Also, the World Wide Web was first tested in 1990. With that being said, I've found it incredibly fun working on my own personal site, just like what people would be doing as the WWW became more accessable to everyone.
- Confidence. You know what your lifestyle is! Don't let other people tell you what your style is. I've had plenty of people try to tell me that I'm actually emo or goth simply because I like to wear black or that I'm more of a '60s-'70s kind of person because I also like media from those time periods. That doesn't matter, though, because I know that I'm emulating grunge. And that makes me happy!
There's no right or wrong way to do this, but I figured I could give you guys some tips if you wanted. <3
Have fun and express yourself however you'd like! Cringe culture is dead; enjoy what you want as long as you're not hurting yourself or others. <3
