Not using a smartphone for a whole week.

okay so,

I have my flip phone (the Nokia 2660) (which is a early Christmas gift) and well this all started with a thought i had yesterday (Sunday Dec 7th),I had absolutely no plans, so I ended up scrolling on TikTok for most of the day (and honestly... who wants to do that?).

Anyway so it was later in the day at around like 8pm when I was watching YouTube on you guessed it... my smart phone. That's when I got the genius idea to like actually use my flip phone to what I wanted it for in the first place (to reduce my screen time obvi). Now keep in mind that I already had my sim card in my flip (and still do), but I still used my smart phone for other stuff.

And that's when I was like "Okay no I can't be doing this" and decided to try to not use my smart phone at all for a whole week (Dec 8th - 14th), and so i did. before i went to bed I turned my smart phone off and put it in my desk drawer. 

with a few rules (with some exceptions)

now I'm obviously not gonna use any social media except spacehey as its not that time consuming and actually makes me use my brain, and is lowk mostly for communicating with others instead of doom scrolling. AND Instagram but only for messaging my online friends as i don't want to cut communication with them for a whole week (both of these will only occur on my laptop AT HOME). except Spacehey, that i might occasionally quickly update my status on via my phone works like 20% on my flip (i can basically only make blogs, bulletins and update my status). Also i will allow myself to watch YouTube and like shows on Netflix and such, but NOT too much cuz that will just end up with me replacing TikTok with YouTube videos.

btw I will update this blog every day of this week instead of creating 7 separate ones

Day 1 (dec 8th)

okay so today wasn't as hard as you would expect, but there were some differences.

In the morning                                                                                                                          I like ACTUALLY woke up at 5 (something I have been wanting to do for most of the school year but have been too lazy to do), my alarm was on my digital alarm clock next to my bed. Now i actually got straight out of bed instead of laying in it for 30 min scrolling on TikTok, which i genuinely liked about today. I continued my morning phone free with watching a YouTube vlog of one of my fav youtubers whilst eating my breakfast (and then i can't remember what i did from 06:00 -06:55). Whilst getting ready i listened to my Chris Isaak CD as my form of music for the morning.

on my way to school i listened to CAS on my mp3 player

(not much to say about school as i didn't have any time really to use my phone during school)

After school                                                                                                                               Okay so i came home at around 4 and then i just relaxed with a hot cocoa and an episode of grey's because it was raining on my way home and i did in fact not have an umbrella and therefore i was soaked when i came home. A little later i called my friend and we kind of talked a little about our days and that conversation led to us talking about rice porridge (i think its called in English) which led to me brining rice porridge that i hade in my fridge to them. and then i had to go buy milk from the store for my mom. I guess after that i came home and read a little and watched like 3 YouTube videos.

Overall today i felt a bit more in the present and my day seemed more quiet and claiming, was there a few times when i wanted to go to my phone and use it? yes. but i didn't because i am determined to do this for the whole week lol. I'll see ya tomorrow

Day 2 (dec 9th)

today... well uhm i didn't have much free time BUT when i did I WATCHED YOUTUBE which is something i don't want to do too much cuz atp i'm just replacing it with scrolling.

In the morning

right.. so remember when i said yesterday that i managed to wake up at 5 yesterday, well I failed today BUT its fine cuz at least i got some more rest but that also meant i only had 1 full hour until i needed to get changed and go to school. but basically i watched youtube and listened to  my Taylor swift TTPD cd whilst getting ready

after school

okay i vacuumed, i watched 1 YouTube video and then i got caught up with talking to a friend and now I'm updating this blog.

Overall I'm kind of disappointed that I'm like only watching a bunch of YouTube and i WILL not watch too much tomorrow TRUST

Day 3 (dec 10th) 

(sorry for late update i was too tired yesterday)

Right so this whole thing is actually easier than what you'd think i haven't even thought bout wanting my smart phone AT ALL since day 1

In the morning

I woke up at around 5 BUT i actually sat in bed for 30 min and read cuase i just didn't want to get out of bed just then, but hey at least i got some time to read!! (finally)

after school

now.. funny story i actually just sat with my computer all evening trying to change my profile and so yeah... not much to report

Overall I'm happy that i got to read a bit but uhm then there's that part where i sat all afternoon/evening trying to fix my profile...

 Day 4 (dec 11th)

okay so today i was really busy and i also had a lot of fun!

in the morning

okay so in the morning I woke up at like 6 cuz i start an hour later than usually on Thursdays anyway so what i did was that i read and watched a bit of YouTube (like 1 YouTube video)

after school

so after school i stopped by the mall with my friend and we where there for like 3 hours (we mostly sat down and talked but oh well) and then i when i got home i watched 1 YouTube video and then proceeded to study for the rest of the evening

Overall i don't want this "experiment" to end as its so much more fun and i don't feel constantly glued to a small device that i constantly have with me. anyways i do feel way more productive in the evenings 

Day 5, 6 and 7 (dec 12th - 14th)

okay so i didn't do much these days an there isn't much to update on lol

 Conclusion

Okay so.. this past week was more fun than you'd expect (even for a week where i barley did anything)

How i feel after this little experiment is that i do feel more happy and energetic in a way, and i don't know if there is a scientific reasoning to it. but really i feel more peaceful and more present in the moment yk.

one thing i absolutely loved about this was the lack of unnecessary notifications  i got i mean it is way more fun knowing that all your notifications are from your friends whom actually want to talk to you and communicate to you rather than pinterest telling you that "this is your vibe" (no but seriously pinterest sends me more notifications than my friends do) or tiktok telling you that someone re-posted the same video as you, so when i did get a notification i kinda felt joy and excitement to flip my phone open and see who sent me a message!

I really don't want to go back to me using my smartphone because of how much better i have been feeling this past week, and therefore I won't. I guess I'll check my phone occasionally but it will live in that drawer in my desk for a little bit longer.

 would i recommend others to buy a flip phone or any other kind of "dumb phone"? Yes.

I REALLY ENJOYED READING THIS!! I felt the same way using my flip phone. I replaced screen time with reading which was amazing lol. I like how you noticed that you were replacing social media with YouTube which honestly isn't the best thing but u tried to be more present which is really good :D

oooh this is super interesting!!! i switched to an old nokia over a year ago now (proof that it is possible long term as a high school student) and i love seeing other people get to experience that same kind of liberation as i got to when i switched - lowk its not as hard as people think its gonna be but im still proud of u for sticking w it the whole week 💪💪💪

oh also what colour nokia 2660 do u have??? theyre so cute oml....
