I know this is beating a dead horse, don't remind me. But what I notice is that a lot of proshippers.. cannot tell the fucking difference between dark fiction and proship
Enjoying dark fiction is one thing. For example, you can enjoy creepypasta stories without being a sympathizer/apologist of the character involved. Literally, nobody really cares as long as you aren't saying that a toxic/morally wrong relationship/character/idea is cute or should be accepted.
It becomes problematic when you're actively justifying, romanticizing, glamorizing, or infantilizing this
It gets on my nerves when people say it's a coping mechanism - yes, it is i guess, but it's the same kind of coping mechanism as consuming gore, going on websites such as SanctionedSuicide, etc. It's unhealthy and self-destructive. Using proship/darkship media to cope with trauma or pain you've experienced is the same as using porn to cope with trauma or pain
Most proshippers are minors so i don't expect them all to understand this. But the idea that most proshippers are minors is extremely alarming, because being introduced to the idea that paraphilias (excluding the harmless ones), abuse, etc etc is okay as long as it doesn't harm a real person in one's youth can have lasting and damaging effects. Even more obviously, being convinced that it's okay when it can be romanticized or justified (in the way of Ted Bundy or Richard Ramirez) has even worse effects.
This was initially brought up by my significant other carmillasdiary (who covers stuff like this on their blogs and bulletins) in the comments of a certain someone's blog post - the Japanese serial killer, child molester, and rapist Tsutomu Miyazaki was influenced by the porn and horror media he consumed. This is fucking insane to say but yes, in a logical sense, he was a proshipper. (was, because he was executed)
While i am a consumer of dark media (Postal, creepypasta, Manhunt, shock rock), i am not nearly as affected by it because i do not justify it in my mind, i.e. Postal Dude is fucking batshit insane no matter how funny i think Postal 2 is. It shouldn't happen in real life just because it's justified or glamorized in a video game, fanfic, whatever.
Also, to those saying consuming this media (lolicon, shotacon, etc etc) is legal/a moral gray ground - no, it's not. While it's legal here in tacolandia, it's not in the US - where most proshippers are from. Dana Scully already stated this in her blog, but art/media such as lolicon, shotacon, etc meets the federal criteria for child pornography according to the PROTECT Act - so if you are caught possessing it, distributing it, obtaining it, or viewing it, you could face federal charges for it. Aka you'll be put on a registry, have a criminal record (if you don't already), and serve time in prison. And juveniles can be registered as sex offenders/tried as adults for sex crimes so don't even fucking say they can't
While someone from Brazil, Colombia, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Japan, or Mexico can get away with this because it's legal in those places, any country in a legal gray zone according to law can still prosecute someone for consuming this media. Many US citizens have been documented as being prosecuted for consumption and distribution.
Yes, free expression is free expression, but that doesn't mean it's expression without consequences. I will judge you for saying you ship Frisk and Sans or Andy and Leilei. If it's severe enough, the law will persecute you. Can we stop relying on AO3 authors and ChatGPT for information now?
