Hi there friends!
It's a gloomy and chilly day today, so I didn't want to walk my dog all that much. Earlier in the day it was that kind of freezing cold where it feels like the wind is nipping at you with every gust, so I thought I wouldn't have the energy or the determination to get through my usual hour walk with my girl Lola. I took a nap, woke up, and thought, "Well, might as well just get up and go through the motions." And I got it done! But, on my walk, I was thinking about how my usual walk routine's main priority is getting my headphones, sometimes with nothing playing, other times with a playlist.
Then, I realized that it's kinda weird to put my headphones on, with the noise cancelling feature turned on as well, only to not play any music. For me though, it feels nice to have the world's noise be a little bit muffled. I can focus on watching out for any danger to Lola (thorns, other pets, etc.) That got me thinking about the videos I've been watching recently about accommodations people have made for their AudHD lives. SO! Here's a tiny list of some habits/hacks/whatever you wanna call them that get me through some parts of my life.
- KEEP A TOOTHBRUSH IN EVERY BATHROOM! This helps me brush my teeth more consistently. Sometimes I can't be bothered to make the trek all the way up to my room (I live in a 2-storey house), so I've taken to placing a toothbrush in every bathroom so I can comfortably and consistently brush. My dentist appreciates this, surely.
- HAVE A STUFFED ANIMAL/PILLOW FOR HUGGING TO SLEEP! It may sound childish but I genuinely have no clue how to relax my arms enough to go to sleep sometimes. Being ADHD my brain is always running and trying to keep me up. I go some nights having to toss and turn for an hour before I can rest. Lately, that time has shortened thanks to this cute cat pillow I bought from Daiso specifically made to hug. It just gives me something to fiddle with so I can relax my mind.
- A SIMPLE SKIN CARE ROUTINE KEEPS THE ACNE AWAY! I tend to shower pretty late in the evening. Because of this, sometimes I'm too tired to even attempt skincare, but it's actually quite important for me to do at least one thing. I have naturally oily skin and it gets worse as the day goes on so by the end my face is dying for a proper wash. I keep my cleanser in the shower so I don't have to struggle over the sink. I have a simple routine of toner pads, serums (2, 1 goes on the forehead, the other over my cheeks), and either my azaleic acid cream or the rosacea cream I use for my cheeks. Sometimes I use a night cream over my neck and gua sha the puffiness out of my face. Before, I used to go days and nights without doing anything, but it just made my redness worse and my acne more prevalent. Keeping my routine simple helps me maintain it. Once or twice a month I will do a face mask just for the fun of the game.
- WRITE DOWN GOALS FOR THE DAY/WEEK! I am, unfortunately for my therapist, not a frequent journaler. I find it so difficult to actively maintain a daily log. Instead, I look at my planner in the evening and write down whatever I want to accomplish. I do this for the week as well every/most Sundays. If I do feel in the mood to journal, I try to make a big spread. I put down stickers, receipts, all the things that bring me joy.
- BRING HEADPHONES. I run errands with my mom a lot, almost every other day, so we spend a lot of time in the car. Now, my mom and I get along super well, but we don't share a music taste. We have bands/artists that the whole family loves, but my mom is also a bit neurodivergent so she tends to listen to the same playlist every day. She's dedicated, you can say. This does mean, however, that sometimes I find myself wanting to listen to something she doesn't want to, and in our family the radio is for one person to control, and one person only. So, I bring my headphones all the time, except for the times where I forget them or choose to forgo them.

The toothbrush hack sounds like it'll really help lol, I'll definitely be trying it out :o
And also making lists has helped me sooo much, putting stuff to paper means (theoretically) less things you have to keep in your brain! Even if I try to remember dates or things I gotta do, I usually forget lol, so lists are essential. I keep a pack of sticky notes in all my bags for impromptu list making

yooo i am also 22 with adhd! i also sleep with a stuffed animal at night. i have a dolphin that's the perfect size to support my arms when i sleep on my side and it's really helpful because i tend to flip sides like 5 times before i go to sleep. the meds keep me up and make me think endlessly, but then i feel my dolphin buddy in my arms and remember that i'm here to sleep, not to overthink. he keeps me grounded and reminds me that it's gonna be ok lol.
also, using a planner is really great! ESPECIALLY if you make it FUN!! i've collected tons of stickers, colored pens, markers, and anything that i can add to the page. it can be really stressful seeing all the tasks i need to accomplish during the week, so putting cute stickers, doodles, and bright colors next to them makes it less intimidating. i always fall out of the habit of journaling, but using a planner to keep track of my daily goals works well. also, keep your goals realistic and simple! i mean it. it's good to challenge yourself, but if you fail, you can fall into a nasty spiral. be kind to yourself. start with the smallest wins and build yourself up to the big wins.
