Why I Want to Start Blogging

Growing up, my mom always said I was probably going to end up being an author. While little kid me never really saw that, I can now definitely see where she was coming from, considering I’m a very English-y person. My main thing is that I love writing, but don’t really have much interest, or creativity if I’m being honest, in writing a fictional story. Nevertheless, I’ve always wanted to write something and be at least a little constructive with my time instead of just wasting away by scrolling on my phone for hours.

There was a point in time when I tried to update my diary a lot, keeping my pencil moving so I wouldn’t just be playing video games and browsing social media. I had also tried to write personal blog posts at one point, but never could keep up with them for very long. The issue I faced in both, was that I didn’t find my own life interesting enough to have something to write about often. Don’t get me wrong, I’m very content with my life and I try to take time to appreciate the littler things in life, but even still I find a lot of it not worth writing about simply because it is what I’m used to. As for the things I think should be carried on, such as the Zamboni Incident, I will be sure to include here at some point. But anyway, I wondered “what would I even write about,” which is when I encountered a source of inspiration that leads me to writing this today.

A year or two ago I was followed on my Twitter account by a guy named Westen, who runs a blog called Big Nerd Gaming, where he talks about the video games he plays. While I admit I am far too lazy to read all of his posts, the ones I have read are all great. Reading his (at time of writing) newest post, “Two Years of Big Nerd Gaming” I found the story of what led him to starting his blog inspiring. The part I found best matched how I feel was his desire to create “something” and how that led him to eventually decide to write his own blog. I highly recommend you read his post, it’s very good. To somewhat build off of Westen, I would say I want to write blog posts because I want to write.

So now here I am, deciding I want to write about all the things I enjoy on my very own blog, which I am somewhat repurposing my neocities site for. But to answer the question of “why I want to write a blog,” I would say there are like three or four reasons. The first would be that I want to write. Plain and simple, I want to be able to sit down and type out a bunch of words (typically I scribble them into a notebook but then I’d have to retype them so I’ll just skip that part and do it all on my laptop). Second, I do not want to feel like I am wasting my life away by scrolling social media on my phone. I get pissed when I find out I wasted an hour looking at Instagram reels, so I’m trying to do a lot less of that in life. Third, I think it would be fun to have to think more about why I felt a certain way about something rather than what I felt. This mostly applies to if I ever write a review or something. Basically, instead of just saying “I like Dark Souls” I’d have to think more on that, eventually leading to something such as “I like Dark Souls because of how it truly makes you feel like a wandering warrior, with it’s lack of music adding to the feeling of loneliness as you travel through Lordran.” Lastly, I already talk to my closest friends about all my nerd stuff, so I figure I could start writing it all down since I’m already in the headspace to think about it a lot.
