Last summer, our lawn mower broke, and we were always away from home, so we didn’t have much time to mow the backyard or tear down my old treehouse that was supposed to come down months ago.
My family said it looked trashy and abandoned, with overgrown weeds, brush you could barely walk through, and a rotting treehouse. But to me, my backyard was my sanctuary. I’d sit in the treehouse for hours, admiring the cracks and chips in the wood, the squiggly stickmen my sister and I painted when we “renovated” it with my dad’s spray paint.
My backyard was its own little ecosystem. With dandelions, thick green grass and brush, bumblebees, butterflies. To others, it might have looked messy or abandoned, but to me, it was something beautiful.
