Here's another old review that I posted on my old account, I forgot that I was planning to repost a bunch of stuff I wrote but I forgot. I remember having a lot of fun writing about this album tho.
For years humanity has been improving technology and discovering weird sciencey shit, but before 1969, there was one question that always lingered. What would happen if you set-up a band consisting of groupies? Frank Zappa set out to finally find the answer to that question after he found out that the baby sitter he hired was a groupie, and since groupies like music so much, why don't they make their own music? This is a bit of an oversimplification of the band's history since there's like 6 other girls that I haven't talked about yet but damn what the fuck do you want me to do, write an essay? Fuck off, I'm a loser in university who listens to dogshit. Anyways the GTO's knew nothing about performing music, they knew how to write poetry but not much else, so they needed some help actually having some music in their record. Which is why all the instrumentals in the songs are performed by The Mothers Of Invention, along with some guests like Jeff Beck and Rod Stewart, so already you have a VERY strong cast of artists backing them all up. So why are all my rankings so mixed? I mean I went from giving a song a 1/10 to the next one a 9.3/10, well it's because most of the tracks here aren't even actual songs. More than half of the album is either spoken word poetry or just recordings of the band members having conversations with each other, which yeah those parts are pretty funny but these aren't bonus tracks or anything they're straight up a part of the album. It really sucks cos the songs are REALLY good, I know a lot of people don't like the off-key singing but I think they fit in quite well and I really enjoy them, so I can definitely see why Frank Zappa was so interested in these girls, I think if there was less of these "interludes" (if you can even call them that), this album could definitely be a part of my top 10 but that's not really possible cos of that. There's also a track on Captain Beefheart which is pretty funny, it has nothing to really do with anything but I just wanted to bring that up. Overall this is a fun album worth checking out just for the tracks, but I don't think I can give it anything higher than a 5/10 just cos of the dumb shit in between. At that point if a majority of your tracks are just skits and whatnot, just release all the songs as an EP.
Rating: 5/10
