I listen to a lot of Mitski and I watch a lot of The Terror. I know both of these things very well, so I feel it is my duty to take up the task of assigning a Mitski song to characters (the ones I care about, ergo the important ones) (joking, of course).
A foreword: This post is full of spoilers from the gifs, justifications and just the lyric choices that are in it. Be warned! Also, the song I decided to put in the background of this blog post is Everyone. To me, it suits every single (...human) character on the Terror. Please enjoy!
Let's get the obvious out of the way. Captain Francis Crozier's Mitski song is Drunk Walk Home. I know! I know, it's on-the-nose, but it's really fitting.
For I'm starting to learn I may never be free
But though I may never be free
Fuck you and your money

But though I may never be free
Fuck you and your money
I'm tired of your money
Next up on the chopping block is my dear sweet Thomas Jopson. A Loving Feeling for him! It's more relevant to his treatement pre-promotion but... He changed little after it.
I'm staying up late just in case
You come up and ask to leave with me
What do you do with a loving feeling
If the loving feeling makes you all alone?
What do you do with a loving feeling
If they only love you when you're all alone?
You come up and ask to leave with me
What do you do with a loving feeling
If the loving feeling makes you all alone?
What do you do with a loving feeling
If they only love you when you're all alone?
For Lt. James Fitzjames, there is no song more obvious than A Horse Named Cold Air. The harsh piano notes also make it sound very much like some of the OST in the show. Fun!
I thought I'd traveled a long way,
But I had circled the same old sin
And for anyone privy to viewing him through a trans lens... Of course, Shame. This also fits Billy Gibson very well. The amount homophobia internalised on this boat is unbelievable.
It feels so good, it feels so good
And right outside the door nobody knows
They're right outside the door and they don't know how it
Feels so good, it feels so good
They're right outside the door and they don't know how it
Feels so good, it feels so good
(He's so beautiful...)
The frost, it looks like dust settled on the world
After everyone's long been gone
But me, I was hidin', or forgotten, the only one left
Now the world is mine alone
After everyone's long been gone
But me, I was hidin', or forgotten, the only one left
Now the world is mine alone
Another one that's really on the nose is Pearl Diver for Henry Collins, but trust me! I swear, it fits him so well! Especially his final descent into madness, the narration of the song makes so much sense.
Those creatures of your woken mind
Don't fear them or their hunger
Forgive the sea, follow the tide
With the monsters on your shoulder
Doctor Harry Goodsir... Well, I couldn't find one for him alone. And maybe that's better? I don't think he'd do well in a solitary environment. He's sharing I Will with Silna!
There's no need to be brave
And all the quet nights you bear, seal them up with care
No one needs to tknow they're there, for I will hold them for you
'Cause all I ever wanted is here, all I ever wanted
This one comes from my lovely friend Octo, who I'm in the process of rewatching the show with at the time of writing this! He suggests Remember My Name for Cornelius Hickey.
After all that I can do for them is done

I need someone to remember me
I need something bigger than the skyHold it in my arms and know it's mine
I also think that a song worth mentioning for him, and specifically his relationship with Billy Gibson is I'm Your Man.
Others were never to blame after all
You believe me like a god
I betray you like a man
Edit (11/12/25): Upon further reflection, I've realised that I'm Your Man fits Francis Crozier and Thomas Jopson as well. They're all sharing.
And finally, Lt. John Irving... Honestly, no song fits him perfectly. Mitski is too anticonformist for him to be able to relate to any of her songs. But he's my little angel! I redid her entire discography just to find a song that vaguely fits him.. So... My Body's Made of Crushed Little Stars.
I wanna see the whole world
Would you kill me, Jerusalem?
Kill me, Jerusalem
Kill me, Jerusalem
Come find me

Thank you for going through this blog post! If you have any thoughts, suggestions, or anything of that nature, I am begging you to leave a comment.

i'm really impressed by how perfectly the lyrics fit fitzjames ! and I love what you came up with for the relationship between hickey and gibson !!!
(hickey's gif choices a immaculate :3).
I have a feeling you like Cornelius Hickey. And I don't know how *I* feel about that.
Thank you regardless!
