My thoughts on peoples recent discovery of the Tumblr Sexyman:

I see the phrase β€œtumblr sexyman” suddenly entering popular vernacular as somewhat of a travesty. The phenomenon of tumblr sexymen is such a very specific thing that only was able to exist on tumblr and nowhere else. For a character to meet sexyman status means that they have to meet very specific qualifications that only a few characters possess. The fact that the internet layman has caught wind of the phrase’s usage means that the phrase itself has become somewhat watered down in meaning. One can’t just ironically call a character a sexyman, because he’s tall or morally ambiguous or is simply popular amongst women. It’s a delicate thing.

I was there on tumblr during the rise of the sexymen phenomenon and I see it as something to be celebrated. It’s liberating sexual nature for young women is something special, and seeing it used as a meme lately has seemed quite alienating. Those who were not there simply do not understand its significance to internet culture as a whole.

YES! I came in a little late but I saw some of the earlier stuff too and it’s a very tumblr thing. I love people doing deep dives on tumblr culture because theres corners even i haven’t touched but I don’t like everyone trying to replicate/bring it back on other platforms when they don’t have the weird supporting culture.
