"Family friendly" and "just for kids" aren't the same thing

I've come to realize people truly do not understand the differences between something being "family friendly" and something being "just for kids". Very little in this world is actually created SOLELY for kids.

This has most recently been an issue with Wicked and Wicked For Good in threatres. I have seen so many people complaining that children were screaming and talking and not sitting still through the screenings of both movies. Then, in the comments of every single one of those posts, is people saying "It's a kids movie. What did you expect?"

NO IT'S NOT.

Wicked is NOT for children.

Yes, the movie version with Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo is rated PG. That does not mean it is a children's movie. The plot was watered down to be appropriate for a wider age range in these movies, but they are still not children's movies. They are family friendly, but they are not FOR kids specifically.

Wicked is notoriously DARK fantasy. The book is not for children. The story was not created for children.

Something being rated PG has never meant it was created for children.

Gilmore Girls, Once Upon A Time, The Golden Girls...

None of those were made for kids, but they were all rated PG.

And a longer standing issue: People who claim Disney movies and the Disney parks are made solely for children. People who claim it's weird for adults to enjoy them.

MICKEY MOUSE WAS FIRST TARGETTED TOWARDS ADULTS.

That's right. Mickey's first time on the big screen was alongside full length film "Gang War". This was also the first time any Disney project was released in theatres.

Mickey Mouse was created to be family friendly, but primarily targeted adults. It wasn't until parents began to become upset that some of the content included wasn't "child friendly" enough that Mickey got watered down into the role model character we know and love today.

As for the parks, Walt said himself on the opening day of Disneyland: "Here age relives fond memories, and youth may savour the challenge and promise of the future." Disneyland was intended to be a place of nostalgia for adults, and a place to look forward to future adventures for children. Adults going to Disney parks isn't some new made up idea. It was the original intention.

Walt Disney specifically created Disneyland because he was tired of everything being "for kids" instead of for everyone. He was tired of not being allowed to participate in anything when he took his kids out. He wanted to be allowed to participate in the fun too. So he created his own place where everyone of all ages would be welcome.

Yet still, the comments of every single Disney post is always "grown adult btw" or "not a kid in sight".

Family friendly entertainment is not "for kids".

It's for everyone. Including kids, but not excluding adults.
