1. Bjork - Greatest Hits
On this list you will see a lot of Greatest Hits albums. I feel their reputation isn't so good because a Greatest Hits is kinda the printed version of a "This Is ____" Spotify playlist, which is always a 33.3% split between the songs tiktok made famous, their charting hits from 2005, and random-ass deep cuts that nobody really loves. Collecting CDs made me gain a huge appreciation for these because I don't have to choose which of my 5 favorite Bjork albums to spend my 15 euros on and instead buy a decent mix of all of them. They won't be perfect, but they work. And oh yeah, I forgot to actually talk about Bjork. She was my top artist last year and her first 4 albums are perfection to me, but I won't guarantee they will click on first listen. Find the songs you like, keep coming back to those, and you'll realize you like all the rest of them too.
2. The Postal Service - Give Up
You know how some albums are just so much better at night? I listened to this one every single night falling asleep for a few weeks two summers ago. I believe the Postal Service is a band under the genre "indietronica" which is exactly how it sounds, indie + electronic. The 2 members of the band are Ben Gibbard from Death Cab For Cutie (I effing love dcfc!!) and Jimmy Tamborello aka DNTEL, whom I wish I could tell you about but I only found out about DNTEL 30 seconds ago. I love the sweet melodies on this record and Ben's one of my favorite lyricists ever. Fun fact: he wrote this album in 2003, which is also when he wrote DCFC's Transatlanticism, my favorite album of all time from when I was 14. If you like the film Garden State and haven't heard this album, you def should do so!
3. Daft Punk - Discovery
It's catching up to me just how long I'll take to write this blog because of how much I love talking about music (as seen on my other entries, lol). Still I persevere! Interstella 5555 is the entirety of the album Discovery, with animation from none other than Leiji Matsumoto, creator of the anime Captain Harlock. The story follows an alien band that gets abducted by a human who wants to be their manager and uses them for fame, money, and gold records to rule over the galaxy. It is a really impressive piece of art and honestly warrants its own blog post. All this to say Daft Punk inspires me to keep creating and I hope they do for you too. If you want to get into the band, this album is 100% the place to start.
4. Julie Ruin - Julie Ruin
If you google Julie Ruin on Spotify you won't find this album, that's how rare it is. Kathleen Hanna, after ending Bikini Kill but before starting Le Tigre created a one-off solo album under the pseudonym Julie Ruin. To me it's the perfect blend of both bands. Super catchy pop/electronic music but all done through samples and drum machines. It's a true testament to Kathleen's creativity and I just love her so much. Don't be fooled though, because a physical copy of Julie Ruin is impossible to find and ridiculously expensive; I burned my own copy and will brag about it forever. (side note: Kathleen did come back to Julie Ruin this time with a band, adding a 'The' to the name. That's what u would find on Spotify, hence why I mentioned it, but it really isn't very rare and beloved by many riot grrrls like myself.)
5. Blondie - Atomic Blondie
Another Greatest Hits, already?! The writing fatigue and procrastination stress is starting to hit me so I'm going to write very little for some of these! Why did I choose to write it all in one go?? Yes, I love Debbie Harry and this collection has a whopping 20 songs on it, meaning it's my personal bible. If you want to actually listen to a studio album though, I love Parallel Lines. Hanging On The Telephone is my favorite song.
6. Juju - Siouxsie and the Banshees
Am I goth? No. Do Monitor, Night Shift, and Into The Light absolutely slap? YES. Insane that this album came out in 1981. That's prehistoric to me. The band was doing a lot of really cool and experimental stuff in a time where synths were just barely starting to pick up traction, and this album is the best of the best in my opinion. Spellbound was on here too! I'd recommend this even to people who don't listen to any post-punk, it's a good place to start.
7. Pavement - Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain
The guitars sound like they were run through a meat processor. The vocals seem like they were recorded whilst the singer was solving a difficult math problem. It's slacker rock my friend, you will love it or you could hate it. When I first listened to it, I was kinda stunned by how disjointed and messy the sound was, but already by my second listen I understood the melodies coming together, kinda like when you're sculpting and everything looks like shit until you really dig into the details. My favorite lyric is "Out on my skateboard, the night is just humming and the gum smacks are the pulse I'll follow if my walkman fades," because that's such a beautiful image to me. If you like Dinosaur Jr, Duster, or even My Bloody Valentine, it's worth checking out!
I enjoyed writing this blog a ton and hopefully I get to make a part 2 or edit it to add the rest of the collection! This is all I can write at the moment because I have a big boulder to push to the top of a mountain only for it to roll back down and the cycle to continue. One must imagine TKO happy.
Much love, hopefully I'll update soon! (´▽`ʃ♡ƪ)
