Citing is an interesting and powerful tool, let's start with that. I've written a 30 page BA thesis two years ago, and though it isn't anything comparable to a PhD, it took a lot of work, and, most importantly, a lot of sources.
But that's academia, you mutter under your breath, shaking your head in disappointment. Are you an idiot, Jackie? Nobody uses sources when they fight online.
An interesting point, I say. Why the hell not?
Generally, I try to approach every discussion with an open mind. Perhaps there is something the other party could show me that I never considered before that could help change my mind. Unless I find the topic redundant (i.e. anything regarding the shape of the Earth, the validity of vaccines etc.) I will engage with the discussion as critically as I can.
What I've noticed is that, usually, I'm the only one doing that. People, even adults, love to throw an insult and an opinion and think they achieved something, as if the whole point is to convince yourself, not your conversation partner, that you're in the right.
Which is silly, too, because I could never be convinced that I'm right purely off of my own beliefs and opinions, even (or especially) when research proves otherwise.
Even funnier are the people who attempt to engage in an academic discussion, only to provide sources that are not academic or, better yet, completely irrelevant. Whenever the concept of "morality" is even mentioned, I start laughing.
Either way, I guess maybe this is a little bit mean? Though I'm not sure, but I think a little bit of ad hominem is okay towards people who don't care enough to have opinions based on facts, but rather use only their own feelings and personal morals to judge the world around them.

They're all reactionist. There's never a proper response.

Now you've made me wonder if the most vocal individuals of these hypotetical discussions even know how to properly have a discussion

I remember a girl writing and citing her places about her stance about proshipping and someone said, "huh well actually.." like if they knew better while the while made her essay lol
i see this really often actually

every time. it happens every time, not just when debating proshipping, but in any scientific field where the sources are widely available but people think "i dont think so" is a valid argument

Because citing isn't rewarded as much as explosive behaviors are. Algorithms are trained to enable fights, no matter how pointless they are
its all so reactionary

Youtube has a whole community based on it i. e. the commentary channels

maybe im too into academia, or being kind and respectful, or being able to change my mind after being presented with sufficient evidence. or autistic. its probably that, but i dont understand people who never change their minds, even when proven wrong

Preach!! Every time I approach a discussion (with someone that has a different view point than I do), I come in trying to understand how they see things, and providing as good "arguments" (in " 'cause I'm discussing, not trying to convince) and sources as I can; only to end up having ableist slurs or other crass and vulgar insults thrown at me.
me asking for sources and getting called a pedophile for being profiction

no yeah this is why I'm off most places online now it pisses me off bad hsakjdh I see something actually intriguing being discussed but either one or both sides do a terrible job at explaining their side or one of them thinks it isn't that deep or doesn't require a proper answer and that an insult/ratio is enough ,, it CAN be that deep actually and if you can't even back yourself up with a singular source just shut upppppppp

Nothing frustrates me more in an online discourse than when I say something factual, that I could source back to if asked to, and my adversary comes back with "Well you're stupid and gay and immoral." Usually in different words, but that's the gist. It just tells me they have no more points or even thoughts, but still feel the need to defend themselves as Right and are grasping at straws. It's annoying and tbh it's laaaaaaammmmmeeeeeee
even worse when they respond to a factual statement with "well i disagree" okay??? nobody gaf bro, nobody gaf
