i have this personal way of categorising "religion" and "fact", and it's pretty simple: religion is anything that somebody chooses to believe that cannot, at least with our current understanding, be proven true or false. it doesn't necessarily need a system to be religion. opinions might seem like an odd case, but not really to me: "blue is my favourite colour" is a fact (i mean, it's not true for me, but y'know), and "blue is the best colour" is religion. there is no evidence that blue is objectively the best, but there is evidence that somebody's favourite colour is blue.
personally i don't really have any particular belief systems, but i'm sure i do have some individual beliefs.
the only issue i can see with this whole thing is that everything could technically be considered anything if you're willing to go back far enough. logic is fragile.
"the earth is pretty much spherical."
"no it's not."
"yes it is, we have photos from space."
"those photos aren't real."
"well, geometry and physics both show that the earth is round."
"geometry and physics are both nonsense. everything in the universe just happened to line up to make the earth look round time and time again even though it absolutely isn't."
and i think both those people technically are right. i mean, i think the earth is round, but that's based on my own beliefs!
yeah i just wrote this as a comment and then realised i should also post it as a blog. i do that sometimes sorry if it seems CHEAP
