In my experience it depends on the fic. if its fan fiction then the story is already made, you just need to figure out what point in that story your fic branches off from to explore something else.
But if the fic your making is from your own ideas, then its best to figure out at what point does the story actually start from first.
Figure out your characters, their roles, if the story revolves around one character or multiple.
Once you've figured out that starting point, try providing a small explanation on your world, what it's about, how it works, whether or not its fantasy based or something more grounded in reality, if there things that exist in your world that might motivate certain characters to do something.
After that brief explanation of your world, then progress the story from the starting point that you have.
But the most important part? Don't be afraid to mess around and have fun!
That's the point of creating, isn't it?
youre righttt i write regular stories for myself to see but NEVER fanfiction let alone publishing it and who knew it would be so different?? because i know people like to read something straight to the point and snappy lol

i really do have to think about the character's roles in general because i am trying to make it from scratch on my own ideas.
but god thank you SO much for leaving this message and at the perfect time because i was just considering trashing the half way draft LOL but i will def put this all into consideration

I look forward to what you create for yourself then..
Until the moment that you share that aspect of your creativity,
I wish you a happy writing fellow author :)
