(Jafina is my dnd character, opayami is pbe's dnd character. The world in the present is set in 1634 France (rococo era) with technological advancements. My character is 28 in the current setting)
It was 3 in the morning on the first of April. The entertainment domin. It was on this day, she was born. It was on this day that the story begins.
December 2nd, 1611, winter. Jafina at age 5 plays in the woods.
"Hop and hop, hop on the log. Stop stop, dont trip, dont fall." Jafina sings. "Jump and twirl, avoid the squirrel. Hop and hop, hop on the log." She jumps from fallen tree to fallen tree. The air is crisp, the wind sending a chill down her spine. She shrugs it off as a house comes into view. She sniffs the air. "Stew! Mama made stew!" She exclaims joyfully. She skips down the hill, tripping over a rock. She falls, face first into the dirt. Unfazed, she stands up and brushes her dress off. "Stew! Stew! Stew!" She slams the door open as the woman at the stove jumps. "Jafina!" She exclaims. "What happened to your face? And your knee?" She sets her spoon down and rushes over to little Jafina. Jafina smiles widely. " I just tripped mama." Her mother sighs. "Look what you did, you got your nice new dress all dirty." Jafina runs past her to the stove. "Stew! You made stew!" She says, jumping up and down. Her mother looks tired. She stands up, brushing off her apron. "Yes, I did. Would you like to go set the table for dinner? Papa will be home soon." Jafina nods as she goes off to set the table.
~roughly 15 minutes later. Jafina and her mother and father sit at the table, eating their stew.~
"So how was your day dear?" Her mother starts. Her father looks up from his bowl letting out a sigh. "To be honest, it was slow. Not much today" Her mother looks distraught. "Let's hope tomorrow is-" Jafina slurps her stew loudly, interrupting her mother. "JAFINA." Her mother says. "Manners. Please." Jafina just smiles in response, and continues to eat her stew. This time she does so quietly. "As I was saying, Let's hope tomorrow is better than it was today." Her mother says. Her father nods and simply laughs a bit. "Yes." He says. "Let's hope."
May 25th, 1617, spring. Jafina at the age of 11 plays in the grass near the other village children.
Jafina sits on the grass under a tree. In her hand she holds a ball. She throws it up in the air and catches it. She sets it down, looking bored. As she stares out at the other children she notices them staring at her. Their game looks fun. She thinks to herself. She stands up, and starts to walk towards the other children. "Hello!" She exclaims as she trots closer to them. "Hello." One of them states in reply. "What are you playing?" She asks. "It looks fun." She smiles widely. The children subtlety make a face. If Jafina notices, she doesnt make the fact known. "Its a game." One child responds. "I can see that. But what is the game?" Jafina replies. "Were playing hot potato." Another kid states. The kid next to him glares at him for responding. Jafina giggles. "May i join you?" The kids glance at each other. Jafina stands in silence, smiling as she waits for a response. The children look at her, a weary expression on their faces. The boy from earlier is the first to speak. "Sure." He says timidly. Jafinas smile grows wider.
June 18th, 1621, early summer. Jafina at the age of 15 preforms for the children of the town.
Jafina holds in her hand three knives. "And now, I will juggle these three knives I hold." The children gasp jn shock as she jungles the knives without effort. Her smile is wide as she catches the knives and bows. The children clap, cheering for an encore. As she lifts her head, she notices two men standing in the background. She squints as her stomach does a little flip. Something isn't right. She thinks.
~an hour later. Jafina walks along the path that leads to her house.~
As she walks, she hums a song to herself. The knives in her basket clink together as she starts to skip. Suddenly, she stops. A bead of sweat runs down the bridge of her nose. "This feeling again..." she mumbles. Something isn't right. The once loud county side filled with cicadas and crickets and an assortment of birds Suddenly seems all too quiet. She starts to walk again. Then she speeds up. She speeds up again. At this point, she's running. She's not sure why, but she feels the need too. Then, all of a sudden, she felt herself hit the ground, and the world went dark.
~A day later. Jafina sits on the ground.~
Jafina opens her eyes. Their world is still dark. She tries to move her hands but they seem to be stuck. Oh. She thinks. Its a burlap sack. Great. She remembered hearing about this from the ladies in the town. People had started to go missing. Just then, the sack is ripped from off her head. In front of her stands one of the strange men from earlier. He sneers. "Hey there little fella." He says. His tone is full of mockery, and his breath laced with alcohol. Jafina had to stop herself from making a face. She hated alcohol. "Why did you kidnap me." She stated dryly. The man laughed. "Welcome to the circus kid. Were gonna make you a star."
~about 5 months later. November 7th. 1619. Jafina stands in the center of a circus, a ringmaster at her side.~
"And now! The moment you've all been waiting for!" The ringmaster exclaims. The crowd cheers. "My assistant, J, will now stand at the board." Jafina walked to the large wooden board at the side of the ring. The stood at it and stretched her arms out. "I will take these knives," the ringmaster said, pulling out 6 knives from his pockets. "And I will throw them at J, but never hit her!" Jafina noticed something about the knives. They glinted. Not like the usual fake ones. Thunk. A knife hit the board. Thunk. Another knife. Thunk, thunk. More knives. The ringmaster had an unsettling expression on his face. Jafina started to worry. The ringmaster held in his hand the last knife. He was poised to throw it at her heart. Jafina tried to move but she was stuck. Her clothing was pinned by the knives. The ringmaster lifted his arm and threw. Then the world went dark again.
~about 5 minutes later~
Jafina slowly opened her eyes, groaning. She laid on the floor in a backroom of the circus. "Ugh... what happened..." She loked over to her right where a young girl stood over her. She looked no younger than 8 years of age. There was a slightly worried expression on her face. "A-are you alright?" She asked. "Wow that's a thick accent you have." Jafina blurted out. The girl made a face but quickly changed it. "I'm Opayami." She said calmly. "I'm here to save you. That man was aiming to kill you you know." Jafina blinked. "I figured that out." A pause. "Thank you though. I would probably have died if you hadn't saved me." Opayami smirked a bit. "Well, that's what I do." She said. There was a slightly cocky atitude to her voice. Jafina gave her a questioning look in response. Smartass. She thought. Just then, voices started approaching the room which they were in. Opayami stood up quickly, offering Jafina her hand. "We have to go. Now." She said. Jafina took her hand and stood up. "Where are we going?" She asked. "Far away from here." Opayami stated. Opayami's tone was a little rushed, but calm. Her hands however, Jafina noticed, were sweaty. "Once I get you out of here, your life is free for you to choose what you do." Opayami said. Jafina nodded in response. Then, as the voices at the door got louder, the two of them ran out the back door, and into the inky night.
April 14th, 1625, spring. Jafina at the age of 19 preforms now as a jester infant of nobles.
"My good sir, pray tell, what was that ungodly sound we heard earlier?" Jafina said in a sing-song voice. "If you must, pass gas, do so quietly. Not everyone wants to hear the consequences of your eating habits." The nobles laughed. "OH Jafina you never cease to make ne laugh!" The man said. "Well of COURSE count bernard!" Jafina said tipping her hat. "Tis only but my job!" She did a little flip and landed on a large ball in the center of the room. "You preform without a flaw Jafina." Count Bernard declared. Jafina smiled. "Why thank you count!" She said hopping off the ball. "But alas, tis time for me to bid aidu for the night." Jafina said bowing. "Must you head to bed so soon?" The count exclaimed. "Why not stay up for a moments more. I have someone i wish you to meet." Jafina was intrigued. "Do tell!" She responded. "Where is this mystery person?" She scanned the room playfully. "Up here miss." A voice responded. Jafina looked up. In the rafters sat a male jester. He smiled warmly at her. Interesting. Jafina thought. The man jumped down from the rafters and landed next to where jafina was standing. "You're quite a short lady." He said laughing. "You're quite a tall sir." She responded. He was quite tall indeed. Compared to Jafina's wopping five feet of height, he seemed like a giant to her. She physically had to look up as if she was starring at the sky to see his face. He laughed at this. "Jafina, meet Jimbo." Count Bernard interjected. "Jimbo is another one of our Jesters here." Jafina spun around to face the count. "Ah yes! I do remember the countess spoke quite fondly of him." Jimbo blushed a bit. The count laughed. "I've assigned Jimbo here to be your new performance partner. I do hope you two well get along?" Jafina smiled and bowed. "Of course my good sir."
