Hiiii,
Today I am going to write about another band I've been obsessed with some years ago:
I got to know them on TikTok like everybody else.
Nevertheless, their music is on a high level. It is not even that complicated to interpret the lyrics as they describe quite clearly what is going on. But they have such a unique way of putting things into words. It's almost like a modern poem.
And the accompanying music is just ... *kissing sounds*!!
And the singer, Alex Turner, isn't bad either.
Some of my Friends that are deep into all kinds of niche bands would probably wrinkle their noses at Arctic Monkeys as they are quite mainstream. But deserved; I love it.
Let's take a closer look at one of my recent Arctic-Monkeys-favorites:
Arabella
Arabella's got some interstellar gator skin boots
And a helter-skelter 'round her little finger, and I ride it endlessly
She's got a Barbarella silver swimsuit
And when she needs to shelter from reality, she takes a dip in my daydreams
My days end best when the sunset gets itself behind
That little lady sittin' on the passenger side
It's much less picturesque without her catchin' the light
The horizon tries, but it's just not as kind on the eyes
As Arabella, oh
As Arabella
Just might've tapped into your mind and soul
You can't be sure
Arabella's got a '70s head
But she's a modern lover, it's an exploration she's made of outer space
And her lips are like the galaxy's edge
And her kiss the colour of a constellation fallin' into place
My days end best when the sunset gets itself behind
That little lady sittin' on the passenger side
It's much less picturesque without her catchin' the light
The horizon tries, but it's just not as kind on the eyes
As Arabella, oh
As Arabella
Just might've tapped into your mind and soul
You can't be sure
(That's magic) in a cheetah print coat
(Just a slip) underneath it, I hope
(Askin' if) I can have one of those
(Organic) cigarettes that she smokes
(Wraps her lips) 'round a Mexican Coke
(Makes you wish) that you were the bottle
(Takes a sip) of your soul, and it sounds like
᭩
Just might've tapped into your mind and soul
You can't be sure
The song is about a girl - Arabella - and has an overall figurative topic which is space. Arabella's got a space-like eccentric style and wears interstellar gator skin boots, a Barbarella silver swimsuit, a cheetah print coat and smokes organic cigarettes.
Alex Turner likes to line up a bunch of quaint words in a row and create flowing sentences. 😍
The song makes me want to meet Arabella in person and to take a look at her boots and her swimsuit and everything else she's got.
I mean, she's more beautiful than the sunset?

In fact, the song makes me want to have Arabellas style. I like space-like things very much.
I think the song is even quite feminist. Yes, it talks about Arabellas beauty et cetera, but it is clear that the narrator doesn't own her in any way. Arabellas actions are in focus, not the ones of the narrator. She wears cool things and she visits the narrator because SHE needs a break and she's actively sitting on the passenger seat (the focus is not on who's driving). And even the narrator can't be sure if she Just might've tapped into your/their mind and soul. So Arabella is not easy to understand and has depth of thought if I interpret it correctly.
The narrator describes her, but the song is not about masculine desire. The narrator could in fact be a woman. Only the line "that little lady [...]" suggests that the narrator is bigger than her and probably male. And of course Alex Turner - a male individual - is singing.
Now I have to write about a very sad and traumatic experience. I didn't get to visit an Arctic Monkeys concert, because my former best friend practically uninvited me because she wanted to make a sole sisters venture out of it. Now let's have one minute of silence for lost opportunities of my life.
Thank you, thank you. Maybe one day, I can rectify this.
Yours sincerely
