So I watched del Toro's Frankenstein on Sunday, and since my opinion on stuff is SOOOOO important (LMAOOO), I wanted to share.
SPOILERSSSS
First things first, the book and movie are insanely different. Right now, I'm reading the 1818 version of Frankenstein, so my thoughts are based entirely on the standard copy. Although the movie is almost completely different from the book, I still absolutely loved it. To me, it functions as a separate entity from the book.
The costuming and overall design were breathtaking, especially Elizabeth's wardrobe. Which, talking about Elizabeth, I really really liked her character in this movie. If you've read the book, you'll understand why she's much more likable in this adaptation.
One of my criticisms would center around other characters. Although Elizabeth and the creature were depicted beautifully. I wasn't a fan of how characters such as Victor's father and Henry were changed. I do think the change in these characters was helpful in the audience's overall view of Victor, since he seems to be more outright evil in this movie. Something about this movie is that they made it a point to highlight how evil Victor truly is. They might as well have flashed giant red text on the screen saying, "Victor is actually the monster btw." Meanwhile, the creature was made much less evil. I think one of the points of the creature killing in the book is to solidify his humanity. Humans are complex creatures that do evil things when pushed far enough. In the movie, he kinda suffers, and then just goes after Victor.
Having said that, the themes explored throughout the movie were beautiful. My favorites were forgiveness and generational trauma. When the creature goes out into the sun, I thought back to the scene where Victor tells him to take in the sun because it's life. After forgiving Victor, he goes out and takes in the sun, he embraces life. I CRIED.
Anyways, that was my very basic and condensed opinion on the movie because I don't wanna make it too much of a yapfest.
