I hate my phone.
A couple days ago, I shut down my computer. And of course, I picked up my phone. I looked at it and was just hit with this intense wave of hatred, the kind I haven't felt in a long time. It irritates the hell out of me. I feel like throwing it out the window, smashing it, breaking it in two.
It's... so simple and yet so complicated.
It drives me crazy that this one thing has everything I need to get by – a camera, music, internet, messaging. It just makes me so mad!
For about a year now, I've been really into old tech. I have this old square monitor (and it still works!), an old clock radio with this ancient touch screen (the kind that reacts to pressure, not just a touch). My friends send me their old phones (they don't work, but for some reason, they still make my heart happy). I might as well admit it, I even have an old cash register! Besides that, I have two old film cameras (what we call "soap dishes" here now, because people say the photos look soapy – which is totally not true, by the way; I used one in school when I had a brick phone, to take pictures of presentation slides and homework from the blackboard... and it worked perfectly!). And there's also this really, really old camcorder that uses tapes... I was even filmed with it when I was a little kid, playing the violin...
And all this stuff gives me such a warm feeling, like a soft, big blanket.
But this phone. Sure, it can do everything all this other stuff can do, but so what? So it can do everything at once, big deal! It feels like it has no soul, no matter how much you customize it.
I'm fighting the urge to just chuck it out the window and go live in the woods, but I have no idea how to get rid of this irritation. I just want to go back to that wonderful era when phones were DIVERSE, with all sorts of designs, flip phones, sliders... Have you even noticed how different old phones are from each other?
And honestly... I'm sick of minimalism. When is skeuomorphism coming back?
If you want, I can show you some photos from these cameras. Except for the camcorder, though. I have no way to transfer the videos from it to my computer. All I have is that one video of little me playing the violin.

yknow if you really like old tech and would something thats more minimal but can still run some modern stuff
you can find some fliphones that run a modernish android

look at this website they have a bunch of flipphones if thats your type of thing a lot of people on here talk about switching to older tech hopefully this helps
make sure to look at the specs and do your proper research on the phone before you buy it btw i recommend a phone with android 10 i think thats the latest version of android they have for those types maybe 11-12 exist but idk 10 will give you the longest support and can use stuff like the appstore and such the only downside i potentially see is the tiktok and gaming if you do that might not work well (gaming probably won't work at all unless its old java phone games..) but I've heard instagram youtube and google and such work wel

I think the same way you do, a modernized flipphone can work well. The problem with the old ones is that they use 2g signals, and in so many countries those signals don’t exist anymore

Actually, the funny thing is, in my country, almost everything you listed—especially TikTok and Instagram—is blocked :)
So I figure... if we found a way around that, then we'll probably figure this out too.
I've known about phones like that for a long time and have been dreaming of getting one. So you hit the nail on the head! The Android version was really the only thing giving me pause.
I'm still thinking it all over.
