Happy birthday to Sophie Lancaster (Nov. 26th 1986), she would have been 39 years old.
In the grim hours on August 11th 2007, a 20 year old student Sophie & her partner were severely attacked by a group of teenage boys while walking through Stubbylee Park in Bacup, Rossendale, United Kingdom, just for being different & alternative: a cruel attack & act of prejuicide. Her partner was severely attacked. She fought back from the attackers, while she was protecting her partner. And they aimed over her, kicking her head multiple times. The result: her partner survived. But she went into coma, didn't recover or regain consciousness & tragically died from her severe head injuries 13 days later.
A soul unnecessarily lost from the injustice of intolerance, Sophie will always be remembered as a symbol of fighting prejudice of the alternative subculture, acceptance, love, individuality, courage, & strength.
The first time I heard Sophie's harrowing story, I was deeply saddened. Like Sophie, I was also bullied for being artistic, different, for loving goth - metal music & living the alternative lifestyle. It's been 18 years, I continue to support Sophie, being part of the goth & metal alternative subculture community, & to live different is the best way to be authentic with myself & my life. At a very young age, I became aware of things. I found my calling. I fought hard for my rights & freedom. I've cut ties with a lot of people: be it of blood relations or those that I knew since childhood, & I've also made strong bonds with people that are open-minded & with same ideologies & interests, in creativity, music, & celebrating the marvels of the world. In this journey, you will know who your true tribe are. So stay as true as you are. Everyone deserves to live & love for truly who & what they are. Fvck judgemental, stereotypes, & prejudice!
