Evil telepathic girl 06 chapter one

Evil Telepathic Girl 06

Chapter One - I Got Out

The Gap State High School was an absolute shithole. There were exactly three things people did for pleasure there; getting high off any substance you could possibly find (liquid paper, deodorant, ect), enforcing heteronormativity with violence, or just being born as a person genuinely interested in putting in the hard yards to one day lead a fulfilling life. If you didn’t do one of those three things you were just plain miserable, and none of those things were for Lila.

The only part of it Lila could ever bear was media class. She loved how with a mere camera whole worlds could come to life. All it took was a couple of photos mashed over each other and A dragon could fly through the air, or a true loves kiss could take place, or even the downfall of the government. Lila particularly liked that last one. But by the government she meant her evil media teacher who seemed like it was her sole mission to make Lila hate film, and by downfall she meant her getting punched in the face.

Ms Bat had just informed Lila that she would have to stay after school to finish editing her film assessment. Apparently, her film did not have enough dialogue in it, which Lila had spat back at her “That’s the whole point!”

“Well, it doesn’t meet the task sheet so fix it, you can work with Alice tomorrow to rerecord. For now, you have to delete all the parts without dialogue, you can stay until three.”

Lila scowled, both at the half hour of ridiculous punishment and the deadnaming of her friend. Ms Bat had hated Alex from the first day when she yelled at him for using the boy’s toilets. “His name is Alex.”

“yeah yeah whatever, just fix your movie. I have to go to a meeting, so I’ll check back in at three, get working.”

With that she left, not even caring to close the door properly. Lila took in a deep breath, she was definitely not going to survive the rest of 2025.

She was also definitely not going to change her film, but she needed to finish some of the sound design for the fight scene between light cyclone and thunder boy.  Light cyclone held out her hand toward thunder boy and Lila decided that needed a sound effect. Her cursor walked the screen of the mac loitering over the sound effects folder. She clicked and scrolled through. Her eyes fell on “Evil Telepathic Girl 06 (1).wav.” That looked perfect.

The sound of the mouse clicking echoed through the room as Lila waited for the file to play. It had been at least five seconds now and all she could hear was an annoying humming behind her, probably just the aircon. She clicked on the folder again. Her headphones remained silent, but the persistent hum still filled the empty classroom.

Lila scrunched her eyebrows together, fiddling with her aux cord, why wasn’t it playing?

She looked back at the screen and almost blinded herself on the bright reflection shining off it. What the fuck? She whipped her head around to find a girl in school uniform staring murderously at her, but it was wrong. Her uniform was coloured differently. Instead of the dark forest green the gap seemed to love so much it was a navy blue, and she was wearing the school captain blazer with the nice tie Lila was glad seniors got to wear.

Her straight black hair was slightly messed up and the head band she was wearing that separated her fringe from the rest of her head was off centre. Blood streamed out of the girl’s nose and soaked her blouse creating a stark contrast to the deep blues of her uniform.

She was… pretty, but in an off-putting way. That was probably because she appeared in a flash of light behind Lila soaked in crimson blood.

Lila was confused. Was she some sort of representative for the school? Had the gap created some sort of maths team? And why the fuck was she covered in blood?

“Uhhh…” Lila started. She was immediately cut off.

“What the hell did you do to me?” Seethed the girl, her voice low and scratchy.

The question rang out in the room as Lila recoiled, sitting back in her seat. Stunned into silence, she didn’t say a word.

“What the hell did you do to me?!” The girl was yelling now. Blood spattered over the desk in front of her.

“Who are you?” Lila managed to get out. She wasn’t even sure if the girl would be able to hear her.

“Never mind who the fuck I am, who are you?” Lila adjusted her own tie at the question.

“Lila McDougal,” she said, voice trembling a bit, she was scared now, actually scared, not just curious. “My name is Lila McDougal. I- seriously I don’t know what happened.” She was rambling now, unsure what the girl would do if she stopped. “All I was doing was finishing up class work and then you showed up in a flash of light behind me, uniform all wrong- I mean not wrong but…”

The girl’s eyes grew narrower, and she pushed over the desk between them, making a beeline for Lila. “Don’t you dare tell me I’m wrong, it’s you sickos that are wrong. everything is wrong, and I’ll never stop until I get out. Now tell me why…” She trailed off looking down at Lila’s blouse that she had forced an iron grip on. She stared at it for a good minute, Lila not daring to move.

“Holy shit,” the girl breathed, amazement washing over her eyes. “Holy shit it’s green. Your logo is green. The school logo is green. Oh my god.” The girl now collapsed onto Lila, pulling her into an unexpected hug, half laughing half sobbing into her shoulder. Lila hugged her back, not sure if it was the right thing to do.

The girl kept mumbling in her ear. “I got out, I got out, I got out.” Was repeating on loop like a broken record. After another long minute of sobbing and soaking Lila’s blouse with blood (her mum was going to be so mad), Lila shifted in her seat. The girl pulled away from the hug and Lila stood up from her chair.

“So… are you going to tell me your name now?” Lila said softly making sure to lace the works with a smile as to not provoke another outburst. Lila needed a plan. Information was key. If she knew how the girl got here and who she was maybe she could help her because she obviously wasn’t well.

The girl looked down at her shoes, expression changing from giddy excitement to a completely blank expression, devoid of any life. “I don’t know.” She breathed. It seemed like she’d taken a blow to the chest. “I haven’t known for a whole week. I can remember what I’ve done, my friends, what I liked, but… I don’t- I don’t know who I am.” She buried her face in her hands and started sobbing again. Shit. Lila didn’t know what to do. She seemed to calm down when they were hugging last time. Yeah, that was a good idea, a hug. This time it was Lila who got up and wrapped her arms around the other girl.

Lila barely knew this girl who was crying salty tears into the crook of her neck. Lila thought now that looking at her for a bit, she vaguely recognised her but not very well. She ran the events of the last ten minutes over in her head. Ms Bat being evil, Lila rewatching the fight scene in her film, opening that file… the file! That had to be it. That’s when the humming behind her started and then the flash of light. Some real sci fi shit was happening.

“you’re not like evil, are you?” Lila said into the girl’s ear, and she looked up, tears starting to dissipate.

“What? No, what makes you think that.”

“I dunno, maybe the fact you appeared behind me out of thin air, covered in blood. Also, I think that this file triggered your appearance, and it’s called Evil Telepathic Girl 06  (1).wav.” She said the name of the file in a mocking voice, waving her head around and grinning. She was trying to keep the conversation light in case the girl was actually evil.

The girl scrunched her face up, half confused half annoyed. ‘That was kinda cute.’ Thought Lila. Ughhh, not now, she had more important things to do than to be a girl kisser. Instead, she took the girl by the hand (still kinda gay if you ask her) and walked her over to the computer.

Lila pointed to the file and the girl squinted at it. “Greyson,” she whispered. “That Bastard!” She said, now very much not whispering. Lila tried not to notice that the door Ms Bat had failed to close was rattling violently in the background. “I’m going to kill him, I have to kill him, before he kills 07. Shit shit shit.”

The girl continued to swear under her breath while Lila was focused on the posters on the walls  that were falling down around her. The girl seemed to notice Lila looking scared and her expression softened. The posters stopped falling and the door stopped rattling. Lila was scared shitless.

The girl walked over to her and placed her arms on Lila’s shoulders, face now serious. “Ok, I think there’s been enough faffing about, I’ll explain what’s happening I promise but first we have to get away from that computer.”

Lila nodded slowly. The now serious air in the room making her nervous. This girl was explosive. One minute she was crying, the next laughing and now she was staring into Lila’s eyes like they held the meaning of life. “Ok, yeah. I know a place, but I’m going to get my friends. Maybe they could help?” Lila asked. She really needed backup right now or she was going to either run away or do something really stupid with her lips.

“Yes, that’s a good idea, we’re going to need all the help we can get.” Lila nodded again, this time more confident and lead the girl out of the room. She would deal with Ms Bat’s wrath tomorrow.

Lila pulled out her phone to alert her friends. The girl looked at her weirdly. “That’s a big iphone you got there.”

“Uhhh yeah I guess, haha.” Lila said hesitantly. Weird

Autumn was starting to set in, the light April breeze catching on both Lila and the girl’s hair. The girl shivered, eyes darting around. A shaky hand rose to adjust her headband as she started dragging her feet.

“Are you ok?” Lila asked tentatively.

“Yeah, I just- Everything feels different. My head is all blurred. I feel like there are things in this suburb that weren’t here before. I can’t remember what but… it just feels off.” The girl shivered again, looking shyly at Lila, almost as if she was ashamed to admit it.

Lila gave the girl a sympathetic look as she began traversing the boulders on the creek bed, carefully guiding the girl to place her feet in her footsteps. Her foot slipped on a small patch of algae and Lila caught her hand, dragging her back up and placing a hand on her back to keep her steady.

After a little more trekking they reached Lila’s group’s usual spot, a large boulder overhanging the creek with a gap in the trees overhead, allowing for the sun to seep warmth into their backs. They sat down and Lila took a large breath in. She was really fucking grateful that this spot was just across the road from the school. It was a calm and quiet spot that she could go to pretty much anytime she wanted, away from all the noise of yelling teachers and racing cars.

A large “AHHHHHH!” rang through the trees and the girl’s head shot up, alarmed. She looked over to Lila, silently asking what was happening and Lila just shot her a wide grin.

“Sam, watch your step or you’re gonna break an ankle!” She yelled as three kids all stepped out of the vegetation and headed towards the pair. The one on the right had short bright green hair with black roots and was wearing a nirvana t-shirt with baggy dark blue jeans. They shot Lila a grin through darkly lined eyes. The two in the left were both wearing black converse, small in size compared to the large docs on the one on the right.

The middle kid had shoulder length brown hair and was still in school uniform, opting for the boy’s shirt and the long pants that matched Lila’s. The one on the very left, wearing a Ramones t-shirt and black denim jorts with short black hair, stopped in his tracks and stared at Lila’s blood-soaked blouse, eyes wide and face pale. “Dude what the fuck happened to you? And who’s the girl?” He half spoke half yelled, pointing at the girl.

“It’s fine Alex, just come sit and I’ll explain.” Alex nodded and moved towards the pair. The two other kids still stood frozen, only just taking in the sight.

“Sam,” Lila said looking to the middle kid. “Soren, that means you guys too.” She said seriously. Sam and Soren made their way over.

The five of them settled down on the boulder. There was a collective shuffle as they all squirmed under Lila’s piercing gaze. After she had finished transmitting “This is serious, so do not fuck around” into her friends’ minds, she turned to the girl and said, “Do what you did in the classroom, with the door and the posters.” In a monotone voice.

The girl nodded and the trees around them immediately started creaking. The light breeze picked up to a strong gale and the water in the creek started flowing like a river on a stormy day.  The three of Lila’s friends all stood up, looking around and then looking back at the girl wide eyed and scared.

The wind died down and they all sat down again, waiting for answers. “Ok, we all know Ms bat is evil right?” Lila asked. The group nodded hesitantly, now more confused than scared. “She made me stay in after school after purposefully dead naming Alex because ‘my film didn’t have enough dialogue’ or some bullshit.” At the mention of his name Alex shifted in his spot. “I needed a sound effect so I clicked on a file, Evil Telepathic Girl 06 (1).wav …” she looked over at the girl. “And she appeared. She said she would explain how and why when there was back up. Apparently, we’re gonna need all the help we can get.”

The girl nodded, finally making eye contact with the rest of the group. “I’m going to start from the beginning, well at least the beginning of what I can remember.” The girl scrunched up her eyes and took in a large gulp of air. “The first thing that happened when I woke up was a flood of memories. I could see my friends, my home, my,” Again, the girl took in a big breath, as if the next word was going to assault her. “…Family. It was all blurry and fuzzed and I couldn’t see the details, who I was, was missing, but the memories were there, taunting me. Their presence seemed to have been directed, shown to the right position, just to tempt me with something that wasn’t there.

“After my mind had stopped playing ticks on me, I took in my surroundings. I was at school, but my uniform was wrong, something was wrong. The lights were out, and I woke up slouched over my Mac. I had been working on my media assignment apparently. I called out, hoping for an answer but no one replied, just the faint echo of my own voice. I went to look outside but still no one. It was nighttime and the moon was shining a bright blue, casting an almost digital glaze over the school.

“After a while of wandering the grounds and adventuring through the abandoned streets of the wider world I began to count the hours. About five days had past and I had lost all hope of ever escaping from the hell I had been cast into.”

The group was now intrigued with the story leaning a bit closer with every word.

“I had just finished a lap of the school oval when someone appeared in front of me. A figure in a dark cloak. They handed me a USB stick with the words ‘Evil Telepathic Girl 06 (1).wav’ scribbled on it. They told me it was a key of some sort and that I needed to bring it to the abandoned house near the petrol station in exactly 24 hours. I was desperate for anything interesting to happen to me so a day later I marched through the eternal night up to the old house.

“As I approached, neon blue light seeped out of the windows. I braced myself and approached the door. Just above the handle there was a USB port. That must have been what the key was for, so I slipped the stick in. Everything slowed down.” The girl was breathing hard now, lost in the retelling of how she got here. Her palms were shaking and Lila, being the lesbian she was, placed and hand on top of them. A feeble attempt at comfort.

The girl continued. “I was watching my body from the outside, it disintegrated into pixels, scattered through the air, drifting towards the door. Then I blacked out. I woke up again, like I did the first time, but even more wrong. I felt like my atoms were scattered across the room even though I was in one piece again. The sound I heard was cutting in and out, like bad cable. Someone was trying to talk to me, voice low and grumbly, repeating the same words over and over again: wake up.

“Everything was too much. The sound, the feeling, the throbbing in my head. I lost it. A blood curdling scream rang out through the building as I sat up abruptly. I didn’t realise I was the one screaming. Glass shattered around me and a gust of wind broke through the window, knocking me over. The voice was now clearer, coming from a man in a large seat at the end of the room.”

“He said ‘They usually do that.’ I was scared. He told me that someone banished him to this realm long ago. He told me that he was going to use my energy to make his way out. Seven people he said he needed. He had already gotten five girls. I was the sixth.

“He told me that I was sent there because of things that I had done, things that I was ashamed of. He said those things made me deserve to die. Deep down I knew he was right. I was evil. I’m sorry Lila, I lied to you.” Lila shifted and looked into the girl’s eyes pleading for an explanation. “I would never do those things that I did to you, but what happened can’t be erased.

“Even though I knew he was right, I selfishly wanted to survive. Greyson, his name was, told me I was wrong, I knew that, but I needed to survive. Maybe I could even help the seventh girl survive as well and redeem myself. I told him that I was going to escape, and he punched me right in the nose. I fell back, certain that the impact my head made with the floor was going to kill me, but it didn’t. I didn’t even touch the floor, I ended up back in the media classroom, staring right into Lila’s eyes. Her opening that file must have pulled me out.

“I know Greyson is looking for me, He can see me through any camera, that’s how he knew about the things I did. I’m going to need all the help I can get. Time moves slower in that reality, Greyson revealed a lot in his evil villain speech, we can still save 07, we just have to figure out how.” The girl finished her story, and everyone went quiet, taking in the depressing information.

Once the story had settled into everyone’s minds, Soren spoke up. “So, how’d you become the scarlet witch or whatever?” They asked, running and hand through their green hair.

“I think it has something to do with me being pixelized or something. It must have messed with my DNA or my brain waves or whatever the hell can give you telepathy.” She shrugged feigning nonchalance. Her hand was still shaking in Lila’s grip.

“Do you have a name?” Sam finally spoke up.

“I don’t really remember.” The girl said, getting sad again. Lila squeezed her hands in reassurance. Alex’s eyes fell on the gesture, and he then stared daggers into Lila.

“Lila, can we talk.” He said sneaking a glance at the girl. “In private.”

Lila nodded and got up. What did Alex have to say that he couldn’t say to the rest of the group?

Lila followed Alex out into the shrubbery and waited for him to spit out whatever he was going to say. He had that annoying ‘I’m worried about you’ look that he had plastered to his face every other day. Lila knows he always means well. He was always there for her, but it got annoying sometimes.

“You like her.” He said, pulling his eyebrows up into an accusatory point.

“I’ve known her for like half an hour.” Lila replied, a little too quickly. Alex scoffed.

“you’re all over her! It feels like you’re going to pull out a ring in the next two minutes!” He said, voice now raised. Lila looked to the ground trying to think of a response. “Look, all I’m saying is you get attached to people, or just the idea of people, very quickly and then when they turn you down, you get hurt. I should know from the amount of midnight calls we make.” Lila let herself give Alex a small laugh for that. “This girl, whoever she is, isn’t okay. I don’t know if we’re gonna be able to help her, if she’ll make it. Just try not to get to attached, because I have a feeling things are going to go sideways.” He put a hand on Lila’s shoulder.

Lila looked up with a smirk on her face. She only soaked in one piece of information from that lecture. “So, what you’re saying is that you’ll help her.”

Alex gave her a shove with the hand that was still placed on her shoulder. “Yeah, we’ll help her, dipshit.”

When the two arrived back at the group, the three kids sitting there seemed to be in a lively conversation. Soren spotted them and yelled out “Her name’s Sadie now!”

The girl, or Sadie, gave a large grin in the Lila’s direction as she sat down again. Once she settled on the dusty ground, Lila felt Sadie lean against her, eyes droopy. “Do you guys have any more questions?” She asked, her voice sending vibrations through Lila’s chest.

“Uh yeah, do you need to go to sleep?” Lila asked back. Sadie looked exhausted. No wonder though, it sounded like she’d been through hell and back. Lila looked up addressing the rest of the group. “I think we’re gonna head home, we can come up with some sort of plan tomorrow.”

The group nodded. They all understood.

The two walked up Lila’s winding road, Bernarra street it was called. Sadie’s feet dragged along the bitumen all the way to the door. “My sisters at a sleep over tonight and my parents are out seeing The Church play, so they probably won’t be back until like 2 am. The house will be nice and quiet for you to rest.”

Sadie looked up, laughing slightly. “Aren’t The Church all old and wrinkly by now?”

“That’s why my parents love them.”

They both laughed hard as Lila opened the door and lead Sadie up the stairs to her room. Once they entered Lila flopped straight onto her bed, letting herself get lost in the soft sheets after the stressful fucking day. She suddenly felt bad for ignoring Sadie and looked up. She was standing up the closed door, eyes squeezed shut and breathing hard. Uh oh. Lila immediately got up and enveloped Sadie in another hug, just to calm her down of course. It had worked twice before.

Sadie immediately flung her arms around Lila and sobbed into her shoulder. “Stressful day?” Lila asked. Sadie nodded.

“Really fucking stressful day.” She said into the crook of Lila’s neck. Lila guided her to sit down with her against the wall.

Another ten minutes of sobbing occurred, then Sadie calmed down, her head still buried in Lila’s neck.

“Do you like the name, Sadie?” Lila half asked half wondered out loud. Her hand started running through Sadie’s hair.

“I don’t know. It doesn’t feel exactly right. I know I had a name. I know I did, but I just can’t remember.” She looked up, meeting Lila’s eyes. “But I guess Sadie will do for now.” She gave a weak smile.

They stayed there for a bit, just looking at each other until Sadie pulled her eyes away to take in Lila’s room. There were posters covering every inch of wall. A lot of film, television and band names stared down at them. The bookshelf on the other side of the room held a small collection of novels, a large amount of CDs and a CD player was mounted on top of it. As Sadie’s eyes wandered around, they landed on the Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge cover that was lazily blue-tacked to the wall.

“You Like my chem?” Sadie asked, eyes head still turned away.

“Yeah, They’re like, one of my favourite bands.” Lila said, laughing a little bit.

“You know I went to that show they did in fortitude valley last year with Green Day.”

Holy Shit! Lila would die to see that. “Dude, that’s awesome!”

Sadie grinned. “Yeah, it really was.” Her face then dropped, as though she’d just told the whole school she was a furry or something, half embarrassment, half shame. “I had to sneak out though, my parents absolutely hate them.”

Lila frowned, her eyebrows knitting together. “Why?”

“You know that one song, uh, You Know What They Do to Guys Like Us in Prison? It’s not exactly the most moral song ever.”

Lila’s eyebrows knitted moved even closer together. “What? Are your parents from the sixties or something? Being queer isn’t…” Something clicked in Lila’s mind. “Hang on, fortitude valley with Green Day?  That show was in like 2005.”

It was Sadie’s turn to have her eyebrows go all funny. “Yeah? 2005, last year.” She gave Lila a weird scrunched up look.

“Sadie, It’s 2025. Dude! You’re a Time Traveler!” Lila stood up, pointing straight at Sadie. What the fuck. This was crazy. Lila had befriended a time traveller.

Sadie opened her mouth to say something but was immediately cut off. Lila’s wall began to shake, and bits of concrete started to fall onto the carpeted floor. It felt like a damn wall that was waiting to burst, and when it did Lila and Sadie both flew backwards, hands up to shield themselves from the flying rubble.

“WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK!” Lila called out, searching for Sadie in the mess. Her eyes darted around the room as she scrambled too her feet. They locked on a figure standing near the freshly torn hole in the wall. “Sadie?” She called out. The figure stepped forward, bearing a long, dark, hooded coat. Not Sadie, not fucking Sadie.

Just as panic started to settle into Lila’s stomach and hand grabbed her wrist, strong and firm. “Run, NOW!” Sadie screamed. They both darted through the door, Sadie pulling Lila along with all her strength.
