ice protests

today i attended my first protest > <' (at my high school- i realize that i hardly specify that)

we protested against the ice raids happening across the united states. if you agree with what ice has been up to, please kindly unfriend me. the brutality and lack of compassion involved with these raids is disgusting and against everything in my morals. there is no reason to tear families apart and deport people back to the wrong country just because they tried to seek a better life.

anyway. here's basically what happened:

  • it was organized by a bunch of senior guys, and was originally supposed to be held at our flagpole to protest in front of parents waiting to take their kids home for more publicity, but the school decided that would be unsafe (which frankly, it would be - our flagpole is right out in the open and it wouldn't be a safe place to hold a protest), so they decided to move us to our football field. i think a lot of people were upset with this and felt that we were being hidden away, but y'know
  • it started 45 minutes before school ended, so I'm super worried I'll get a skip for it, BUT because the school helped organize it (they changed the time and place), i'm hoping it won't be a super huge deal??
  • anyway, i left my math class (last class of the day) and just walked around the track for 45 minutes with my friends. i didn't have a sign or know any chants but at least i was there :)
  • my friends had some cool signs tho and we saw a few- my favorite was "ice melts in a culture pot" idk i thought it was clever
  • there wasn't an enormous amount of people, but i would say at least 100-200 people came.
  • to be expected in a southern town, there were a bunch of trolls. they mainly came to heckle us or just cause a little trouble, but the teachers supervising it removed them and made most of them leave. there also was apparently an anti-protest that happened in our smaller gym. only 50-60 people went, but it was mainly trumpies trying to get out of class. (lowkey losers :p)
  • also there were some people that went and protested up at the school sign, but they weren't allowed to so they got the police called on them T T

tbh i feel bad thinking this, but it was a little pointless. ice has already left our town, and because the school helped organize it, it was just a group of teenagers walking around on the football field. no one saw it. this won't change anything. also, lots of people didn't get the chance to learn about it because it wasn't properly publicized. it was mostly spread through instagram and snapchat.
however, i appreciate the moxie of the whole thing and recognize that even if this protest may not cause too much action, it's important that we speak our minds. + i got out of math, so that's a plus

xx

It's so nice to hear about this. :( my school is in a conservative are so we don't get to do things like these but any voice is important even if it's just heard within the schools or people in your community.
