I don't know any other Spurs fans and my soccer friends don't really care but I watch this team all the time, as it's my favorite, so I have built up a lot of thoughts about them and how they play and I have no one to share with and that's what the blog is forrrrr!!!
For the uninitiated, Tottenham is a soccer/football team in North London. Historically they've been one of the bigger teams, and currently they are still big but are not very good and haven't been great for a long time. It's hard to say exactly why. We have had several of the best players of this generation play for our team in the last decade, and as far as wins and trophies and winning cups, it hasn't done much.
Our current squad is decent, above average, and our current manager is sensible. Which is great, but the prevailing consensus is that he is too sensible, too defensively minded, and can submit to what people call "small club mentality." For example, if a small, local team plays a big, impressive team, the smaller team often plays defensively, safely, cautiously, worried to take risks or create chances because they understand that the other team is better than them, and if they mess up they know the other team will exploit that weakness and push that opening. Spurs have played this way several times this season and it's disappointing. We are one of the "Big 6," the 6 English teams that have historically had the largest fanbases and most success, but we still carry ourselves like we are the scrappy underdogs.
I just wish they were better! I wish we had better players, I wish I could go into a game feeling like we have a real chance and like I'm going to watch brilliant, exciting footy. Watching a Liverpool or Manchester City game, it's like oh wow that's what football can look like. There are brief glimpses of it, 4-0 UCL game against Copenhagen comes to mind for sure, 2-0 against City, but it's just so typically Spursy to play like a small club and I would have rather charged headfirst into that Arsenal game and been ballsy and tried to create chances than sit back and play with 7 defensive players, especially because it didn't work and we lost 1-4 anyway.
That's my club though ride or die #COYS
