of course, you can make clothes like these in the comfort of your own home ;) i am a self-acclaimed diy warrior.. mainly because it helps me not buy so much stuff when im bored of my wardrobe :')

"do i need a sewing machine?" ⋆.˚˖࿔ ࣪

the answer is: depends on what you actually want to *do* with your clothes. this blog will show ideas for those with or without a sewing machine of course, but i figured i'd lay out the pros & cons of using (or not using) sewing machine

sewing machine

sewing machine hand-stitching
♡ neater work, especially as a beginner
✗ probably messy work as a beginner
♡ saves a lot of time
♡ lots of stitch style options
✗ reputable sewing machines can be pricey
✗ trapped in the confines of your home
✗ requires a lot of time depending on the project
✗ takes more time to learn each stitch style
♡ can find affordable good quality needles
♡ can bring a sewing kit anywhere you go

upcycling ideas ⋆.˚˖࿔ ࣪

maybe you clicked on this blog without the expectation of picking up sewing, and there are so many clothing alteration ideas that don't require sewing :) i'll start by dropping some ideas without sewing, then further down the blog, some ideas with sewing. (ps, i have a pinterest board that i semi-frequently add clothing alteration ideas to for inspo!)

cut up tops and pants

a simple, cute, and versatile way to change your clothes up is cutting them up! there are so many different ways to go about cutting your clothes; cutting up the back to make a plain t shirt business in the front and party in the back, cutting the front of a shirt as a visually interesting layering piece over a cute bra or another tank top, cutting some old jeans in the back of your closet to be ripped jeans or shorts!

embellishments are genuinely my favorite version of upcycling! you can bedazzle with rhinestones, add a ton of sick studs to your bottoms, add grommets to your tops for a simple yet bold touch, our use some acrylic paint or acrylic markers to make your own print tops or band merch! (make sure to dry your painted works on medium heat, or leave them in the sun to dry!) the materials are generally pretty accessible, i got my bedazzling kit from amazon (mine came with rhinestones, tweezers, and b-7000 super glue) as well as my acrylic paint markers.

of  course, i can’t include every single way to upcycle with sewing because there’s so much variety! i recommend starting simple (coming from someone that hastily goes for complex sewing projects and messes up dearly LOL) with cinching waistbands or adding trims like fur and lace to your clothes. from there, you can start looking for more patterns and tutorials online. there are lots of free patterns on pinterest to start with as well. you can make a whole day out of this just by thrifting clothes with cute fabrics and finding a cute pattern!

even if after reading this blog, you only upcycle one shirt, or bedazzle one pair of shorts, upcycling can still help save money in the long run because you’re scratching that itch of new clothes by using what you already have, rather than going out to shop instead. it can be easy to rely on fast fashion (and often times it can reasonable to rely on fast fashion if you just dont have the time and money to upcycle and barely have affordable thrift stores, it is almost impossible to stay 100% ethical in todays world unfortunately), but if you do have the means to upcycle instead, youre helping with the environmental damage fast fashion brings. at the very least, this could potentially be a new creative hobby to pick up :)

author's note: i started this blog post in december and finally finished in february</3
