this has just been something on my mind that i wanted to share- cant stress this enough, but theres a few disclaimers at the bottom, so please read them before commenting :)
so im sure we're all aware that tiktok is far from perfect, but i wanted to talk about an interesting factor of the platform: its faulty community guidelines. im well aware spacehey is no better (ive been called a slur on here but cant leave a comment if it contains a swear???) but that's not what im here to discuss. tiktok's community guidelines tend to target innocuous comments and videos while genuinely awful ones stay up. but what i find interesting is that they've begun to target posts that call out the community problems- and i can prove that this is the case.
i tend to post content that combats or calls out the amount of needless negativity on the platform- but more recently, ive been posting on my alt account as well to avoid it getting tanked during their bot/spam account purgings- if im active enough on there i wont get banned. essentially i just repost some old videos/post some funnier stuff on there from time to time, and tiktok seems to have no issue with this.... anyways last week, i made a post talking about how the phrase "it's not that deep" is used to diminish the experiences people are going through- everything can and will be that deep to someone, and instead of belittling them for it, you should help them overcome it. it did pretty decent, so i decided to repost it to my main... and tiktok accused me of stealing content! MY OWN CONTENT!! meanwhile, theres account after account dedicated to posting the same fake reddit stories, reposted content from larger creators, content stolen from other platforms and more- and tiktok has NO PROBLEM with this. i took a scroll through some older posts of mine, and they keep restricting them from the FYP for various reasons- a video that was calling out a creator for starting a cult was "misinformed," a video about herbal remedies being seen as a "crunchy antivaxx mom" thing was restricted for "potential instigation, and the video telling people to help others instead of dismissing their issues- was "unoriginal content." even though IM THE ONE WHO MADE IT. this is blatant bias!!
meanwhile, i can report comment after comment and video after video that's blatant hate, harassment, bullying, sometimes outright bigotry- and tiktok tells me that there's "no violations found!!" why? because they know posts like that will get more engagement, and keep their platform afloat...
ive also been saying this for a while- tiktok 100% has the ability to allow its users to block people by ip or sim card, and they absolutely should give us that feature if the moderators really care about their users... why do i know this? well im american. remember that 16 hour period where tiktok went dark for american users? if you were on an account logged into a US server, were on a US ip, and had an american sim card in your phone, you did not have access to the app for that time... so why cant they give us the option to block people by their ip and sim? simple- beacause ninety percent of conversation over there stops as soon as theres a counter for the harassmentand bullying on there. the amount of people who have confessed to outright stalking people who havent done any real harm to others- ex friends, ex partners, and more- is quite frankly insane... and we all know why tiktok hasn't done anything abouostt it!
in conclusion- tiktok's head team knows their platform is flawed... and instead of working to make things better, they sit by and enable it.
DISCLAIMER:
despite my problems with tiktok, i will most likely continue to use it. why?
- its the only platform where i can talk to some of my friends (including my qpp)
- i can't combat the issues on tiktok from outside of tiktok
- i want to bring positivity and joy there, which means continuing to post.
thank you for understanding :)
