shitty how to: grocery shopping for the holiday

  • get out of my way
  • get out of my way
  • ... get out of my way
in all seriousness, working in this environment is extremely annoying because of customers during the holidays. i'll give you some tips to avoid giving me problems while i'm trying to work! this is all in my opinion and what i witness every day. take it with a grain of salt, or keep some things in mind

  1. please have a grocery list ready to go. i promise it makes things easier than keeping it all situated in your head. maybe categorize it by department so you dont scramble all over the store back and forth. making a list might also have you realize what youre out of before forgetting when youre already walking to the parking lot, thinking "shit! i forgot (x)!"
  2. be aware of your surroundings. i understand it's nice walking around with headphones on, and others genuinely need to wear them to avoid loud noises or other overwhelming factors. i like having my airpods in too when i shop! but that doesnt excuse you standing in the middle of the aisle, staring at shelves and un-moving when people are yelling "excuse me!" because YOU wont pay attention to what's going on around you. some people are working or are in a hurry. i dont want to start running people over with heavy metal runners full of product or bumping or blocking the aisle since you cant be aware.
  3. GET OUT OF THE WAY. basically what i wrote above; dont stand directly in the aisle. a lot of people love to leave their shopping cart in the middle. dont be surprised when people move it because you left it there. youre causing a blockage
  4. don't be afraid to ask for help. its an overwhelming experience trying to find something if youre in unfamiliar territory, or you may stupid for not knowing or don't want to bother an employee. i promise youre not stupid nor bothering for wanting to ask a question.
  5. USE YOUR MANNERS. i dont want to be ambushed with hands and arms because youre trying to reach something in front of me with no warning. just an "excuse me" or "pardon my reach" whatever, is good enough. this ties in with the awareness bullet.
  6. timing. this really depends on the hours and varying stores. for my job, we usually get our delivery around 5-6am. our second truck latest stops by at 12pm. so by closing, especially on busy days, we can be out of a lot of product. don't bother coming in ass crack of dawn and surprised there's nothing put out, because likely we don't have it or its still being unloaded off the truck. if you wait until the very last minute, this is also a problem.
  7. try not to wait last second. this ties in with the timing above. it's so difficult trying to shop and everything you want is sold out completely leading to day of holiday. if you can, please do your shopping beforehand to avoid the crowds and possibly leaving empty handed!
  8. keep an eye on your children. i dont really need to explain this
  9. instacarters/personal shoppers/etc. i am not here to do your shopping for you. im pretty sure some apps even tell you what aisle things are located. dont argue when i say we dont have something, i work in this section and you dont! i know what we have!
  10. most important thing is be safe. parking lots are dangerous because no one knows who has the right of way, or cant drive in general. people are also... assholes. the public has been lacking in empathy for years now. if you can avoid a situation, please do so. or if you feel unsafe or spot anything suspicious, tell a worker or security.
good luck with thanksgiving, if you celebrate, as well as christmas, hanukkah, new years. whatever festivities in between.
