Those who have ADHD, how did you realise/ find out you have ADHD?

I don't know if this is really the place to ask this but I thought I'd ask anyways.

As the title askes Those who have ADHD, how did you realise/ find out you have ADHD?

I've never really thought about if I had ADHD until recently. I was talking to one of my project partners about work and I guess how we work, I was describing to him my usual work flow and then he asked me "Do you have ADHD?"

He has ADHD by the way, and he asked me this very sincerely (not that question is offensive, but I have heard people say that to others as a way to insult).

And I was so surprised because I've never been asked that before. "No- Well, all my primary school teachers said to my mum I should get tested for dyslexia, so it's probably that." I said.

"Well there is a lot of cross over."

Then after talking more and he said "I'm not trying to diagnose you, but the more you talk the more you remind me of me pre-medicated."

"No, I think it's just the dyslexia." I replied, but then another one of my team members chimed in and said, "You can have both."

And I don't know why, but this conversation has really stuck with me.

I think because it kind of scares me, the idea that I could be dyslexic AND have ADHD. I know it sounds stupid but I think it scares because I'm already very reluctant to get diagnosed for dyslexia, especially because my mum has never wanted to get me tested for it.

She said she didn't want it to limit me, and feel like I can't achieve what I put my mind to.

I think I also worry that, "what if I don't have it?" and I'm just slow and bad at spelling for no reason?

For as long as I can remember, I've had difficult focusing on things, had difficulty with reading and spelling, been quite forgetful, and not very good at managing myself (like doing homework or meeting deadlines). I've always thought that it was just the undiagnosed dyslexia, but since one of my project partner's brought up this idea of inattentive ADHD, I can't stop thinking about it...

My perception of ADHD has always been about hyperactivity.

My mum's ex has ADHD, and people would always draw comparisons to how different we were, how calm and I was compared to him.

Me and one of my best friends- who, he and a lot of people suspect has ADHD because of his hyperactivity and how easily he gets distracted- have also been compared a lot. Especially because I'm the "calm" one, and I'm usually the one who has to refocus the conversation.

Because of these comparisons I've never wondered if I have ADHD, because I've thought I was the complete opposite, so when I was ask "Do you have ADHD?", it really took me by surprise.

I feel like I'm making a mountain out of a mole hill but I wanted to know about other's experiences with ADHD. So if your comfy to, please let me know how did you realise/ find out you have ADHD?
