If your alternative...

If your alternative.. what made you dress alternative? I know many Subs cultures are tied to politcal belief and music taste, but besides that, what made you want to dress alternative?

and I mean all kinds of alternative, if its like punk, goth, emo, boho, couqette, all the kinds, and if you are, where do you shop for clothes, because when I find myself trying to find, I always end up with alt ppl saying shein or other kinds of fast fashion which I dont support.

and if you are alt, what kind of make up and hair do you have, and if you have piercings what kind? ive considering an eyebrow piercing for a while, but I just need to figure out the right anatomy ^

Hii, I'm a punk, and because fashion is its own language, it's often used by different subcultures to speak without speaking(if that makes sense). Although I can't speak for most other alternative subcultures, I can say that the fashion is always in some way related to the beliefs of that culture, which compels you to want to dress that way. When it comes to finding clothes, the thrift is always the best. You can find unique and swagg pieces even if it takes longer to find them. And there's always diy and smaller businesses too!

Hello, I've been in Lolita fashion for a while now. For question 1, I don't think I realized what drew me to it until I was already wearing it relatively regularly. It's beauty and cuteness without a bunch of expectations about dressing to show your body. No shade to those who do like that style, but it was never for me. I do not want to have to be sexy to be pretty. In fact, I can look as frumpy and frilly as I want, and yes, people will stare at me, but it weeds out people who wouldn't like me as I am, so I don't have to deal with as many fake friends. I also just like feeling like a princess haha. As for clothes, they can be very expensive if you are buying from the famous brands, so I get pretty much all of my stuff secondhand or off of 42lolita which resells smaller brands from taobao. The latter was quite affordable until tariffs hit. I don't have any piercings beyond regular earrings, but I wish I was less squeamish so I could get a lip piercing of some sort. I'm currently growing my hair out so I can get a hime cut, and I wear minimal makeup because I don't love how it feels on my face.

For the clothing question:
I got most of my clothes from 2 stores in my town. One is a thrift store, the other is like half a thrift half an American outlet store. I also did a shopping spree on Depop once where I got a good amount of things I often wear now. I think in regards to alternative fashion the focus should be more on the political statement than just your appearence. Stupid asf to call yourself alternative for your appearence when you participate in fast fashion like everyone else! The industry is truly truly evil. Unfortunately when I was younger I used to shop at a few alternative-esque stores as well, before I knew what fast fashion really was. Well, it's really everywhere. If you want any kind of alternative clothing my first suggestions are DIY and thrifting. You can also thrift on Ebay and such sites. I did forget to mention a lot of my accessories come from myself. It's awesome to customize ur own clothes :3 There is emough clothing in the world, and if you REALLY want something new, at the very least buy from smaller, style-specific creators. I found a lot of them through social media, but if you get involved in a specific subculture others can tell you abt them as well. Also when someone focuses mostly on creating one style, that likely means a lot more care is put into it. Try to do research when buying new tho, and Imo there's really no need for it considering the amount of clothing that exists in the world. Landfills are only getting fuller, and, in the majority of cases, whenever you shop new someone down the line in the supply chain was not paid adequately or at all for their work.

I discovered my style mostly online. I thought it looked awesome so I wanted to try it out. It felt really right for me, like I've always wanted to be somewhat like this but didn't know it was a possibility. I'm like emo and scene, moreso look scene. The makeup and flashy hair and complex outfits gave me confidence! They made me feel like I could do anything, as cheesy as that is. To me my style is tied to my emotions, expressing the good and the bad through smn like big chunky eyeliner or hair spikes or bangs that cover half my face. It's also political! I feel that whenever I go outside looking like myself I'm breaking so many societal norms and rules. People stare, they always stare. It's scary but also powerful. The fact that my mere appearence can make a statement about gender roles, queerness, fast fashion, the expectations of politeness, minimalism is so awesome in my opinion :) I love my look, but to me it's more than just a style; it's an extension of myself, it's a battle against society, it's a signal that draws in people like myself. I love being alternative!!!! ^__^

I think it was a combination of a lot of things, honestly. As a kid, I suddenly became obsessed with piercings and tattoos (I even gave some of my Barbie dolls tattoos with a black pen once when I was 7), wanted to have colored hair and would regularly use hair chalk to give my hair some colorful streaks, spent a good amount of my childhood fascinated with the 90s and 2000s, and was generally a loud, wild, rebellious, imaginative child who was anything but "normal".

The thing that really seemed to kick it off however, was being a hormonal 13 year old girl in late 2019 trying to figure out who I really am at the same time I was going through some hard times and was on a slow spiral downwards into the abyss. Music was my coping mechanism as I wanted so badly to scream as loudly as I possibly could in a fit of rage at the entire world 24/7.

I found myself increasingly gravitated towards Avril Lavigne's heavier songs and eventually happened to stumble upon a lyric video the song "I'm Not A Vampire" by Falling In Reverse on Thursday, 1/2/2020. Something about that song just felt so right and resonated deeply with me, and since then, I've gotten into more emo/post hardcore/metalcore/pop punk bands and have never looked back.

Oh, and if you want to know where I get my clothing from, much of my closet is stuff I've gotten from my mom as hand me downs from back in the day and stuff I've gotten from eBay (which happens to work out quite well for me anyways as someone who can fit into a contemporary size 00/0 depending on the brand and with sizes smaller than "small" or a 4/6 in today's sizing becoming increasingly harder to find, because God forbid us short, small boned women exist in the year 2025 AD, I guess). I also recently taught myself how to downsize oversized shirts (of which, I happen to have a few) to make them fit exactly like my hand me down baby tees and am currently working on downsizing the one I got from when I went to see The Used on Sunday, 5/11/2025.

As for my piercings, I currently have 5 holes on both ears going from standard lobe to the spot right where the upper lobe ends and lower helix begins, my right nostril, my snakebites, and my belly button. I'm planning on eventually getting my septum, a set of 4 hip dermals, and possibly a double upper helix on both ears as well.

For me personally, I'm an on-again-off-again cutecore girlie but when I'm not dressing like that, then I'm just dressing in whatever alt style I feel like at the time. In terms of what made me wanna dress alt, I'm gonna be so real it was 2020-

At the time I was 12 I think and it didn't really occur to me until then that I didn't have to dress for societal norms and whatnot so as much of a nightmare that 2020 tiktok was, it inspired me so much. I found other alternative creators that dressed how I wanted to look and a major inspo for me is this girl sodappokiii on Insta and omg I've never seen somebody so much like how I want to look/be up until then. But yeah she's a major inspiration for my looks ^_^ I thrift a pretty good chunk of my clothes, but I do buy some stuff new, but it's not from anywhere super specific, just if I see something cute then I get it lol

I kind of always dressed off-beat ever since I was a kid, though only recently have others put me in the alternative category. As a kid I wanted to be a fairy and I dressed like one, which everyone thought was a cardinal sin or something because I was ridiculed for it... when I was about 10 - 14 I really just dressed like how I thought Princess Peach would dress. I was a victim of the times too, and in that era everyone was a liiittle bit emo... some more than others. It was easy to be a little edgy emo princess peach type diva because you could in fact go out and find those clothes anywhere...

I think the best places to buy clothes is to be a massive unapologetic hipster and buy used clothes. Depop is a double edged sword- it ruined thrifting forever, but it is easy to find awesome stuff on there from anywhere in the world if you're willing to pay a scalper's price for it... which admittedly on some things, I will.
Bit tbh? Ebay has always been there for me. They dont use key words on there meant to grab your attention, like bimbocore or emo or whatever. I like to find stuff on depop and try to find the same items on ebay by searching up defunct brands and stuff, like DEB that sold a lot of cute edgier stuff from my youth.
*finds cute top on depop being sold for 40$*
*It's by DEB*
*searches 'DEB stripe sweater' in ebay, filters for my size and sleeve length, finds it or something like it*
Like that ^

Hiii, I used to dress alternatively and recently started to get back into it. I was more of a mix between emo and grunge.
Personally, since I struggled with sewing, I always bought basic clothes and painted them. Sometimes I'd cut the hem or fringe the ends to add a nicer touch. Aside from that, I always added safety pins and scraps of other fabrics into my pieces. My old alternative pieces are from New Yorker and hand me downs: Recently I've ordered from Minga London and Impericon. Definitely check them out. They have that a bit more streetstyle-alt look.
I wear a red clip in hair strand, so no dye because I like my black hair as it is. I just wear my hair down and straight. For piercings, I wear fake helixes and conches that are connected to the normal earlobe piercings with a small chain. I ordered stickers that look like piercings and put them on my ear where a trigs and contra conch would be. I also glue two beneath my eye to look like an anti-eyebrow. I sadly can't get pierced, but there are great options for fake piercings! As for tattoos, none yet, even though I plan to get my back tatted with an electricity mast lmao!

xoxo

Hiii, my style tends to be alternative in a colorful kind of whimsy way (idek if it fits in any existing style or subculture) so a lot of people tend to say it’s not alternative at all, but a lot of my clothes are second hand, they’re like hand-me-downs or thrifted stuff, i just make them work by cutting or sewing them, i believe that all clothes need a second chance and try to see yhe vision, so i just work with what i have and see a lot of diy tutorials.

Also learning to sew and owning a sewing machine is really useful.

hiii!! i originally wanted to dress alternative because of alt tiktok blowing up, pretty much when i got the authority to dress myself (i still have my bunny hat lmao). after covid, i sought out to see what clothes would look best on me but still mostly just got pieces that resembled the stuff online. now i *dress* alt because of my interest in the arts (fashion being one), general self expression, and just having fun before i have to get a full time job with a dress code :,)
secondly, i usually thrift irl or online. outlet goodwills (aka "the bins") are golden for thrifts cus they charge pretty low & only charge by how much the clothes you got weigh. online second hand websites are usually my go-to tho cus they're quite literally right at my fingertips!! alt ppl saying to use shein is so odd imo cus it literally goes against the ideals of being alternative. i think small business are also nice to shop for (once you find one on insta, just go down a rabbit hole of the other recommended businesses) a lot can be a little pricey, although understandable as its not fast fashion, but there are a handful of affordable brands out there! i also lovee thrift flipping as i kind of have a consumer problem. thrift flipping just gives me a sense of novelty to clothes i would've otherwise just thrown to the back of my closet :)

my hair is undyed but i plan to add some red-purplish highlights to it soon (wanted the whole head but got told no LOL) i also have curly hair, so i have a side part rn to kind of mimick the emo/scene/whatever side bangs without having to use heat or potentially chop my hair up horribly with scissors (because i have done that before)
i dont really have a set aesthetic right now, but i think i dress somewhere along the lines of either mcbling or indie sleaze, so i try to do "mcbling" makeup with sparkly eyeshadow & dolly eye makeup to accentuate my eyes since my eyes are the smallest part of my face. i only have my firsts and seconds on my ear lobes rn cus i cant go out and get piercings w/o permission (& i dont really wanna breach my parents' trust by going to do them myself) but my god do i have piercings i want!! navel & nose are definitely my dream piercings, as well as labret, industrial, and tongue. i'll definitely give it way more thought as i approach 18 but thats sort of my "fantasy piercing line up."

For my clothes i try to go as much as possible in thrift stores, usually i fond something cheap i cant remodel, custom or style how i'd like to. i try to think of all the possibilities one single piece of clothing can give. i also try to buy durable clothes and not go to fast fashion.
For my accesories i usually thrift or make them myself

I have i strand of redish / purple-ish hair, i don't go to any hairdresser i do everything myself with a lot of care ! i have a septum piercing (nose ring) but no tats yet ! tryna save some money for one tho !

hope i answered your questions well !
