Sup gang, I'm an alternative/punk black person, I HAVE to know if this is normal behaviour or not bc I refuse to keep internalizing ts
Ever since I've had the freedom of dressing and expressing myself a certain way, I've been excluded or called "whitewashed" by my own race simply because I have different interests or mindsets from them, including by my own family🥀
And I can't tell if this is a common experience because I was looking for alt hairstyles I could do on myself and there was nothing but either the most bread and butter, copy paste styles for my hair type, or straight up not for POC at all
Is this a common issue?? I'm starting to think that wanting being an individual is the reason why I can't feel any connection to my own culture and race
(IF YOURE ALTERNATIVE TOO PLSSSSS FRIEND ME)
Why do ppl dislike when someone is both POC and alt???

i think a lot of the hate comes from an unconscious fear of standing out and having no protection. alternative styles were credited to white people even though they did not create them, because when white kids dressed alt it was treated like a costume or a phase. their whiteness kept them safe while they explored.
for poc, our identity is not something we can take off.
i’m mixed (desi + latina), and my theory is that people push assimilation because they think it keeps you alive. being alt pulls attention, and attention feels dangerous when society already watches you with sharper eyes.
so when people say “you’re trying to be white,” what they really feel is:
“i’m scared society will punish you for stepping outside the place it trapped you in.”
they don’t have the language for it, and that fear ends up feeding the same unfair system they think they’re warning you about. you're trying to be 'white' because you are living without fear--something white people can do (which is, like, hyperbolic but my point is that its that white ppl are given a forgiveness from the system poc ppl aren't).
but no matter how much we blend in, we can’t escape our skin or our features. proximity to whiteness is never whiteness itself.
so be yourself and be your color.
being both poc and alt at the same time is a quiet revolt, a soft cut through an old structure that never planned to make room for us in the first place. just understand it's more dislike from generational fear and less actual hatred.

jamari!!
black alt girlie and i ABSOLUTELY get it !! i find it difficult to relate to a lot of my people since they seem to be very close minded about alternative culture- and it’s tough on the non-poc side too. ive had a handful of not so great experiences with people who think being “alternative” is synonymous with “edgy” and conflate their bigotry with being hardcore. it’s definitely a tough spot to be in when you feel like an outsider even in spaces that are supposed to be for outcasts. but i believe that a core tenet of being alt is simply being yourself and staying true to who you are!! if we can’t find style inspo that involves our hair or skin or body types, it’s up to us to create those styles for ourselves!! keep your head up!! :D

Not black however I do remember in videos I have watched about being alternative many black people in the comments mentioned having the same issue of their parents thinking they were more white cause they liked stuff like patd or fob or cause of them dressing up alternatively which i thought was ridiculous

(im a white person but whatever ill still input)I NOTICED THIS TOO. its so weird??? part of being alt is LITERALLY about not seeing color like r we serious
also ppl dont like it because in-fighting racism created and celebrated 2 distract everyone from the fact that the rich and powerful are the real issue
