simpest book summary: Dan is the main protagonist and also a BIT of an unreliable narrator. Alexis is the main background character, how that works? he's the reason Dan's going on a multi-universal search for him.

Alexis is half of a creature called "Unknown," which is a creature that can shape-shift and protect as a main purpose, they belong in the under-realm or "Beneath", Alexis isn't even supposed to live because it is a half-born. Unknowns kill half-borns young because they don't want the kid to suffer because his human body can't be as versatile as an Unknowns and it'd be painful to shift. But Alexis lived until he's like 23, that's until he got taken by some evil ppl and got hidden in a dead world.

(What's a dead world? A universe or planet that is abandoned by their populations and stopped all cycles of life in there.)

Dan was Alexis' childhood friends since they were 7-8, who also suddenly left the country  without telling after  years of friendship. he came back to see his friend in his worst state, and then after 1-2 months, Alexis was just... gone. the townpeople say he wandered off the woods and got mauled by a bear or wolves, but Dan didn't believe it bc Alexis knew the forest by the back of his hands and had never seen any violent animals.

Dan then finds out about Alexis' "ancestry", blah blah blah, found a grimoire or Oskar's (alexis' dad) journal. got in contact and contract with some other creatures from the beneath, and he goes out of earth and his fixed timeline, gaining temporary immortality.
