thinking out loud: american politics

i would say i'm not very invested in politics especially since i'm not even old enough to vote. it's not something that particularly interests me except when it's very relevant to me.

HOWEVER.. one thing i've never really understood is the concept of the electoral college. i just don't really get why we decided that's the best way to do things. and yeah i know it's always about government control and power and stuff but wasn't it an idea from the founding fathers? correct me if i'm wrong but it doesn't seem like they had much motivation to have our government be all corrupt and power hungry and shit

so literally what's the big deal? it makes sense that it would prevent candidates from focusing on the most populous areas but then they're just gonna focus on the swing states instead right so that doesn't solve much. and also it literally overrides our voting so wtf power to the people where? i just found out that hillary clinton won popular vote and still didn't get elected so these electoral college nerds are bullshit voters anyways because look where that got us.

most of the other reasons have to do with giving the states power and crap which isn't something i entirely understand but how much does that really matter. don't they have enough friggin power. i also saw one point on the criticism side that pointed out because there's a minimum of 3 members per state that the people in states with less population have more weight to their vote.

and like YEAH i live in california so it's probably pretty predictable which side is gonna get voted for. so yes i feel discouraged from voting because what's even the point! people are like "make sure to vote make sure to vote" but it literally feels like i'm being pandered to so i feel useful and like i did something that affected my government when it doesn't even matter.

like i said i'm basically just talking out of my ass here but i've been waiting for this to make more sense as i get older and slightly more educated and it's never clicked for me. but yeah lord nikon... OUT

Nooooo, you don't understand lil gurly, you just gotta vooooote HARDER, stop noooooticing!!11! Unfortunately though, power comes from the muzzle of a gun, and guess who has the bigger guns? The reason the Founding Fathers put this check against voting power is because they tried to stop ochlocracy, but usually states go way too far in the other direction with oligarchy or autocracy as, like any organism, their objective is survival, not altruism.

Though to be perfectly fair, even if we lived in a perfectly fair democracy, it wouldn't get rid of a lot of the issues society has. In general, the biggest problem with any form of governance is human fallibility, that is being stuck in the ego and not attaining a higher level of consciousness. But until then, I guess all we can do is survive, eh?
