This past Friday, I played with Supernova, this time at a place called The Thirsty Farmer. Let me tell you, this place is cookin'!! It stole the thunder from Airport Pub which is a mile up the road.
I'd rather play The Farmer now.
Upon arrival, I noticed this place is actually well-lit for a bar. I hate bars!! Usually they are very maudlin and depressing, which is why people drink so much? I don't know (and I don't judge either). There was a stage in the corner, very small but we made it work. Felt like I was in a tight rehearsal space from way back in the day. So I was used to it.
Once we started playing, the people were dancing non-stop. We played two longer sets instead of three shorter ones, blasting one song after another. Did a couple of ballads but overall kept the vibes movin' and groovin'.
A nice surprise for me was seeing two members of the local death metal band Scarlet King show up. Of course they arrive while I'm playing "Summer of 69" (not the best Bryan Adams song) and I thought "They're gonna bust my balls." Yeah they did LOL but let's face it, even us loyal metalheads are suckers for good strong melodies.
Another interesting surprise: a guy approached me while I was talking to the dudes in Scarlet King, and he said "You sound like a mix of Stevie Ray Vaughan, Steve Vai, and Jimi Hendrix!" I was blown away that he said such a thing. I no longer seek the validation I once craved but this was very cool to hear. Too bad it wasn't with my own songs, but I'll take what I can get.
After the last song, it was the unenviable task of breaking the gear down. That's the worst part. You build up this anticipation, like waiting for Xmas morning, and then when it's over...now what?
I have no gigs until March 2026 with Supernova at Mason Street Grille, but you never know what may happen between now and then..
A band could need a guitarist that knows his shit :)
