Sorry...direct link what??

Can somebody explain to me what a "direct link" is?? I keep seeing people stating in their own websites stuff like "don't direct link to this" "don't direct link to that" what does it even mean? Imma be completely honest and say that I dont know any of the rules or policies behind using material from other sites to your own/decorating your website or profile, and I'm totally fine if someone explicitly says that they don't want people to use their material, but I don't understand what direct link means. What do they mean when they say stuff like "Don't direct link to graphics" or stuff like that?

However, I believe there are some people who just put TOO MUCH pressure on the usage of their material, to the point of being genuinely rude. I've encountered some sites that went like "dont use this, dont use my doll bases, also you cant direct link, also I won't provide material to even make your own material, also I wont even explain you how to even make your own material, also you must know that if you do some of these stuff I'll disintegrate you from the face of the earth-" like what are we even doing here? What am I even here for? I cant do anything I just can look. Cuz if they were to make a damn museum in their site ("watch what I've made only"), then they should make everything unclickable and quit pretending that users are free to roam in the site. like.. whenever I encounter these sites it makes me wanna wrap it up as fast as I can cuz it really ruins the vibe AND makes the experience so unapproachable and uncomfortable... I get it, if you dont want people to steal your art or sum, but it gets to a point where it becomes just being rude and gatekeeping instead of protecting whats yours.

I'm not a master at tech, but I know that there's a way to make the material on your site "unclickable", as in, even if you insert an image or whatever, if you right click on it, you can't download/copy/share etc, so... if this option exists, why do people who do NOT want people to download/copy/share/use their stuff leave everything clickable... I don't understand. Instead of making endless paragraphs of policies and terms of use (which I repeat, make the whole thing so overly serious, unapproachable and uncomfortable) why not just blocking the right click option from the start so you make sure nobody can take the material from your site? Idk if its me that I'm too stupid to understand bc stuff are maybe more complicated than I see, or if they're actually being rude.

I also heard someone talk about "price domain" like????????? what??? What are you paying for?? for what?? i'm so confused.. and apparently it has to do with direct linking or sum..

Point is. When you're a beginner, who literally just spawned in the internet, you literally have NOTHING to learn from, no guides, no instructions, so you either grew up with the internet and so you already know all the terms, details, rules and policies, OR you're way too young for that and end up confused everywhere you turn, so please, for the love of god, explain things even if they sound so obvious, cuz NO, I DO NOT KNOW WHAT A PRICE DOMAIN IS. And as far as I'm concerned, whoever inserts a bible-long paragraph on what NOT to do in their site, I'm straight up giving up on you and skipping to a more free, approachable and down to earth website.

If somebody can explain to me some of the stuff I talked about above (even better in messages), pls use dumbproof language cuz I fucking suck at comprehending web/internet/tech language, so pls explain in the easiest, most direct way possible. I'm stupid.

PS: I found a reddit post that has a very similar problem, just worded better: https://www.reddit.com/r/datascience/comments/rqd7ep/legalities_of_collection_and_redistribution_of/ maybe you can understand what I mean better this way

they mean don't use a link to the resource on their site, rather you should be saving it to a host you control and linking to that. otherwise you'll just be eating up their bandwidth by sending requests to their host to pull the resource every time someone loads your page

I'm so sorry but I can't understand what you mean, I need you to simplify it further, think it as a toddler like explaination x_x

When you embed an image on your page, you have to provide the link to the image via the 'src' attribute, right? If that 'src' is a link to their page, your browser will have to make a request to that page every time it loads your page, in order to retrieve the image. This will take up bandwidth on that page.

so for example the blinkies and stamps I used on my profile are all bad? I only know one way to insert material in profiles and websites, which is the "" way, is there another way? and if there is, is the other way better than how I'm doing? idk if im doing something wrong or even illegal or sum cuz nobody tells you how to do stuff. The only way I learned is to right click and copy the address of the image into that code above, but idk if it's the right thing to do atp??? can you tell me if i'm doing something wrong and how to correct it if so?

it's not "bad" or "illegal" just people might get pissy about it. what they're wanting you to do is save the image to your computer, upload it somewhere else (like your own filehost), and copy THAT link, so that way it won't be using up their bandwidth and will instead be using the bandwidth of a filehost that's designed for such things

oh ok, I understand the concept but I still dont know what a filehost is and how can I create one. Also, recently I saw a website of a person who stated in their terms of use that direct linking is illegal??? thats why I was confused and lowk worried. All I need to know is to be sure of not doing something harmful or dangerous or illegal, thank you for your patience btw

a filehost is just somewhere that hosts files. for example, imgur is a filehost that hosts images (or imagehost). hardlinking to things isn't illegal at all lmao
