Parasaurolophus means “like saurolophus” it is believed to be related to saurolophus, which name means “lizard crest”. Though saurolophus is a saurolophine.
Look:
Parasaurolophus was around 33 feet (10 metres) long and roughly 13 to 16 feet (4-5 metres) tall. It was VERY BIG!!!!!!!!! Its skull alone is around 5 feet and 3 inches long!! Thats taller than me! Other species like P.tubicen had skulls that were approximately 6 foot 7 inches!! Heh..67.....Parasaurolophus is a hadrosaur. That means it had a duck-billed, toothless beak, hundreds of grinding teeth in the back of their mouths and had stiff tails. What makes parasaurolophus different from other hadrosaurs discovered is its unique crest. Its very long, hollow and tube shaped. It was most likely used for mating displays and creating sound. We used to believe they could have been for temperature regulation, though that has been disproven. It could also have been used for species distinction and even social hierarchy as it was a very social animal. It is not the only hadrosaur with a crest, however. In fact, there is a whole subfamily of hadrosaurs that all have crests called the lambeosaurines!
Sound:
Parasaurolophus is the one we have with the most accurate reconstruction of any dinosaurs sound. We can make inferences with others such as the trex, which is believed to sound like a large crocodilian by their larynxes, but we cant know FOR SURE. Paleontologists were able to figure out what sound it might have made using CT scans of the skull. They used these scans to make a 3D model which they simulated blowing air into. It produced a low-frequency, resonating call similar to a trumpet or foghorn. We may be wrong as we dont know about any soft tissues that may have affected the sound.
Behavior:
Parasaurolophus was a hadrosaur, we went over that, but another i didnt mention was hadrosaurs were herd animals. Parasaurolophus used this strategy to stay safe from predators like gorgosaurus and daspletosaurus. They were skittish and quick to flee from danger, like many animals you see today. They are kind of like the late-cretaceous deer if you think about it. They walked on all fours, though they would go on their hind legs to reach food that may have been higher up, and could run pretty fast. Most scientists agree they could run at around 16-32 km/h (10-20 mph). That’s around what the average person could do in short bursts (10-12 mph) and almost as much as elite athletes.
Habitat:
Parasaurolophus lived in what is now western North America. It was first discovered in Alberta in Dinosaur Provincial Park (very creative name) just 220km away from Calgary (around 137 miles, so 2.5 to 3 hours away by car)! They also lived in places like New Mexico and Utah but those were different species. P.walkeri (the most famous) in Alberta, P.tubicen in New Mexico and P.cyrtocristatus in Utah. The climate at the time was warmer than it is now, with lush forests and a seaway splitting the west from the east.
Thats it💗💗
Im open to corrections if i got anything wrong!! please lmk if i did!!!!!!
