ON FORGETTINGÂ
I cannot forget
The screams of my brother below deckÂ
The shackles that bind him to this hell â
A never-ending sound of the ringing bell
And the scrunch of his noseÂ
On the weight that he carried alone
I cannot forget
My sisterâs protest
As he was torn from her armsÂ
For a debt not her own
A slash was her reward
That hoped to quicken her silence
Yet in return
A scream louder than the last
I cannot forget
The promises that leftÂ
Hearts shattered beyond repair â
To people unknown,
To the land they did not own
Yet named
For the tongue was too hard to speak,
too insignificant to learn.
Homes they purged
In search of gold and revenge for a war they began
In the name of a âgodâ
Who had a story and a name,
Who was never theirs to claim
I refuse to forget
The names of our innocent children
Oblivious to the blood beneath their feet.
Forced to see the devil in human flesh
All alone,
As punishment for the color they did not choose
I refuse to forgetÂ
The pages in history torn and silenced
The limbs and organs and lives stolen
Burned and buried to smother the truth
In the name of a âgodâ
Whose name has caused more harm than good
I will not forget
The names of heroes and heroinesÂ
Whose faith
helped them trek in the shadows
In the lair of the devil.
Fearless and determined
With only the guidance of the Star of Bethlehem
In search of a freedom they could only whisper
I will not forget
The stories underneath my skin
Both told and yet to be discovered
In hopes of a better future
For those who are yet to learn.
