COELACANTH (a fish)

CoelacanthΒ is a fish that has a character of primitive bony fish. Famously known as a "living fossil" because it was thought to be extinct until it was rediscovered in 1938 in South Africa.

They belong to an ancient group of lobbed-finned fish, which are closely related to tetrapods. They are also the only living vertebrates with a jointed skull, which allows them to open their jaws very widely for a powerful bite. And instead of a true spine, they have a hollow tube called a notochord.Β

Weight: 50~95kg

Total lenght: 1~2 meters

DISTRIBUTION: Comoros Islands, Coastal areas in southeastern Africa, deep waters near Sulawesi Island in Indonesia.

HABITAT: Undersea caves surrounded by rocks at depths of 150~200 meters.

INHABITING DEPTH: 0~200 meters

DIET: Cephalopods, small and medium fish.

ENDANGERED (the exact number of Coelacanth are unknown, but their popolations are critically low) due to threats like bycatch in fisheries and habitat distruction.
