Unfortunately this is a day late because I went to a murder mystery sleepover thingy with some friends, so here's one of my favorite movies to ever exist!
Plot: 9/10
It's a Guillermo del Toro move, what do you expect? The plot of this movie is honestly absolutely amazing. It follows the story of Ofelia, who moved into her fascist stepfathers with her mother in Spain in 1945. She follows a fairy into the labyrinth near his place and finds a fawn who tells her she is a princess and must complete three tasks to return to her kingdom. Along the way there is an ongoing civil war, and Ofelia also fears the health of her mother and the child she carries. It's a wonderful blend of the fantastic and brutal. I don't want to give away any spoilers but it's absolutely wonderful with suspense, fear, heartbreak, revenge, and twits and turns around every corner.
Cinematography: 8.5/10
The cinematography in this movie is absolutely breathtaking. The coloring, the framing, all of it is done masterfully. The scenes are haunting, suspenseful, and wonderful and this only amplifies it. It's not the craziest thing I've ever seen, but it is absolutely stunning.
Acting: 8.5/10
Some of the most amazing acting I've seen in a film, the actors truly know how to make emotion real. From vengeful, peaceful, terrified and destroyed, it feels as though they are truly there.
Atmosphere: 9.5/10
HOOOOOLLLLYYYYYY SHITTTTTT!!!!! You have truly never scene something as beautiful as this movie I promise. The blend of folklore and old Spain is done insanely well. The costumes are amazing, the set design is amazing, all of it is absolutely insane.
Overall rating: 9/10
Literally changed my life and how I see the world. Please watch this movie I beg. Guillermo del Toro my king. I will say that if you do watch it watch it in Spanish (how it was originally done). It adds so much to it you don't even understand.
