Comparison essay for class, not sure what to choose…

Im in an Art History class right now about the depiction of women during the middle ages, women in the Christian West were often described as having overwhelming sexual appetites that determined their place and role in late Medieval and Early Modern society, there are few women that escaped this role like Mary Magdalene etc.

One of our finals is writing a comparison essay. For this essay we have to use Masaccio’s “Expulsion”. There’s this reading we also have to use that is about this painting. Main idea being how during this time people thought of men as the mind and women as the body. I’m stuck between 3 different artworks to compare.

Kiki Smith - Mary Magdalen

Bosch - Garden of Earthly delights

Michelangelo- Fall of man

I just can’t decide :/

You probably already have started writing the essay so it's okay that you already choose, but if you haven't, I would recommend to use "Mary Magdalen". I think it's the simplest way to discuss the overall theme between the 2 works of art. To show with the statue, that at the time, they believed women to be unruly compared to “Expulsion” pulling the narrative together that it began at the exile of Eden.

I really like your take!! A friend in my class compared Titians "Mary Magdalene"! I ended up using Bosch "Garden of Earthly Delights", There's an article by James Clifton arguing about how in Masaccio's 'Expulsion' Adam is shown as the mind and Eve is shown as the body. I kind of just took that and argued that "Garden of Earthly Delights" that everyone no matter their gender is sinning the same way yada yada. And all ending up in the same place- Hell. Then when you close the tryptic is god after he flooded earth, cuz ya know too much sin.

Ooh, your analysis is really good! I like how you deconstructed the concept about sinning that it effects everyone equally. I think the 4 different backdrops in the "Garden of Earthly Delights" will really help structure your argument.
