I'm sort of sick of those "she's naturally Alt" vids

Look, someone's gonna show up and be like "well it isn't that deep" and "then scroll away?" but I keep getting them on my fyp every once in a while and seeing them and lwk I'm sick of them, so I'm gonna say my piece. 

So why am I sick of them you ask? CAUSE THEY'RE DUMB

everytime you see one it's pretty much just a slideshow of thin, pretty, conventionally attractive girls who are naturally pale and have naturally very dark hair. Which like yeah, you can look like that it's cool, like, nothing wrong with it but it's DEFINETLY not the only way to look alternative and I don't like how some people think of being 'naturally alternative'.

Like, first up, alternative pretty much includes things that diverges away from the 'norm' of society. From what research I did before I really went deep into alt communities this means it emphasises on your OWN personal individuality, creativity and YOUR own self expression. Every single one of the posts that I've seen talk about the whole "naturally alt" thing, very obviously are only aiming for the 'traditional' view of goths and sometimes emos. This COMPLETELY disregards all the other subcultures out there AND the fact that even when someone is within a subculture it doesn't mean they always dress the way you'd expect. Honestly just in general it's SO annoying to me that people want to put ALTERNATIVE people in boxes. Like cmon, of everything ALTERNATIVE subcultures is what you chose to try and put into boxes?? I mean, are you going to stand there and tell me that Gyarus are all trying to have pin straight black hair and try to look pale? Cause last I checked it was the opposite! (unless youre going for a more rokkugyaru or goshikku gyaru sort of look)

Which leads me to my next point of the fact that there are a LOT of subcultures that aren't just fashion, instead they're based on music or politics or literature. Someone can still be punk and not have huge liberty spikes and crust pants. If they listen to the music and they believe in the politics then they don't need the fashion in order to be punk! Sure, it's a great way to express yourself BUT IT ISN'T SOMETHING THAT EVERYONE HAS DONE!!! Someone looking a certain way doesn't automatically make them a certain flavour of alternative - like yeah I know that certain subcultures have some form of rules tied to them (well 'rules' is strong but like... sort of just general things that tells you a bit about it). BUT that doesn't mean that we should be saying that the proper way to be alt is to be skinnier or not have curls or to have a thinner nose or only have ONE type of hairstyle or makeup that makes you alt.

Also, not to mention the fact that its really bordering on racist/makes it even harder for POC alts to feel welcome within their own communities. I mean, someone who's of Indian descent isn't gonna be able to pull off that pasty paleness that some people are idolising, someone who's black or mixed and doesn't have pin straight hair isn't going to be able to match whatever images you're putting up on the internet and many people don't want to go through the effort of damaging the fuck out of their hair to straighten it (even I only do it every once in a while and I'm super careful CAUSE I LOVE MY CURLS)

so yeah, pretty much the general message STOP TRYING TO PUT ALT PPL IN BOXES, STOP IGNORING THAT THERE ARE SO MANY ALT SUBCULTURES OTHER THEN EMO AND GOTH AND STUFF (as someone who loves both and has been obsessed with them since the first time I saw something gothic in public) AND STOP TRYING TO SAY THAT ANYONE CAN BE NATURALLY ALT - LET PPL EXPRESS THEMSELVES HOWEVER THEY WANT SHAIDOSHAIODSHAIO
