I really love the portrayal of Captain Walker in Spec Ops: The Line.
You could really make the argument that the dude is comically evil, or that he was severely misguided, whether that be by the intel he had or by his own mind. Either way, it's undeniable that he fucked up. Bad.
I really love how, with every atrocity committed, all he does is try to shift the blame. It was Konrad, it was the 33rd, it's not our fault. If you choose the ending where he offs himself, the last moments in his life are the first moments since he arrived in Dubai where he finally accepts responsibility, and in those moments, he simultaneously decides that he can't live with that weight. It's a weird comparison, but you could argue that it's the same situation as Jimmy from Mouthwashing. Maybe he isn't seeing things clearly for the first time in a while. Maybe Walker thinks that by removing himself from this life, he's doing some kind of good deed. Washing away his sins in his final act. It'd be a fitting end to a man so lost in his delusions that it led him down a path of death and destruction of everything and everyone around him.
