I have a cousin in western LA, but that's not the primary reason. The Brazilian, Argentinian, and Spanish consulates are all along the same road and I'd need to visit any combination of the three to prepare to leave the United States. Apparently, it's a lot more straightforward if you're trying to move to Brazil because you just need to fill out some online form to get the Brazilian equivalent of a Social Security number.
With Argentina, regardless of Milei, it's more complicated. I haven't even looked into Spain yet. It's not that I'm biased against the Europeans, it's just that I like the culture of South America more. It's gonna be an adjustment to celebrate Christmas in summer instead of winter, but beggars can't be choosers.
The whole trip to LA is going to be highly ironic anyways because I've considered the city to be the USA's version of Rio de Janeiro and California to be the state with the most in common with Brazil. Like, there are many ways to cut this. California is extremely heavily influenced by Mexico and is probably majority-Latino by now. But it also has a lot of Middle Eastern and Japanese people (like Brazil), suffers from chronic inflation (like Brazil in the past, but now Venezuela and Argentina are appropriate analogies), has a mostly arid climate (like Argentina and Chile), and a lot of disgruntled rednecks out in the rural parts (like Texas and the rest of the American south and South Africa).
And go figure, Brazil has two consulates in California. One in LA, the other in SF. For whatever reason, Argentina did not decide to open one up in SF. Any bad jokes about how this is because of the homeless and addicts aren't really going to apply because these consulates have been around for decades.
