my thoughts about skate.

after so many years they have finally done it, they made a new skate game! here are my unwanted and unoriginal thoughts about the game

before I say anything PLEASE TRY THE GAME, it's free to play and there is no pay to win stuff, I think it is a good game to show you the feeling of a typical skate game so please don't let my ramblings scare you away

there is a LOT i can say about skate., some good some bad but most of the bad stuff is from the pov of someone played skate 3 for all their life so keep that in mind

last disclaimer: I know that the game is still in early access, I've been in the insider program for a while now, but that doesn't make it any better, it just means that they can shipped a half finished game with micro transactions and called it a day :(

the good

IT'S FREE!! I absolutely love that there is no barrier to entry, lots of people are discovering skate for the first time and I love it!
skate. has such a nice feel to it, it runs smooth, looks clean (I do miss the darker look that skate 3 had but skate. does look more modern!)
I have to be honest if I have the urge to play a skate game then I'm going for skate. rather than skate 3, not only is it smooth but they also added a bunch of moves that were missing in skate 3 (they did sacrifice dark slides for it :/)

the level design, I love how things feel skateable without it feeling like it's forced, I can imagine people living here (please add NPCs, it's lonely here)

the goofy ragdolls, it does it better than skate 3, it shows the classic skate charm

the bad

it's a forced live service game, you can't play it offline so if they decide one day that they aren't making enough money with micro transactions they can just pull the plug,,, this also means you can't play offline

the missions, I miss the old mission types
they removed: own the spot, own the lot, death races, competitions (street and vert), hall of meat, photography/video, character missions (AND THEN BEING ABLE TO PLAY AS THAT CHARACTER),,, in turn we get something that feels like a knock off of what it used to be

the current missions feel like always the same and very linear, there's only 4 types of missions and 2 of them are "do this thing in exactly the right order",,,
yes I'm aware the new own the spot/line missions replace the photography/video missions but it is not the same, skate 3 had the photo and video missions that felt like you had a reason for doing a specific line and had a cool photo or video as result

I miss the own the lot and competition missions from skate 3 so so much, you had so many options on how to approach each section of the competition, the session missions in skate. is the closest thing to it but it has way less variety

they killed hall of meat, I used to laugh my ass off as a kid watching my skater die but it didn't make it into skate., and the hall of meat type of mission in skate. are very boring

it is currently missing a sense of progression, the story missions are glorified tutorials and completing challenges only reward you with cosmetics, I miss the board selling progression of skate 3, growing your team, etc, at least it felt you made progress with every thing you did,,, hopefully they will fix this, making a battle pass does not count

skate 3 had more character, the world, the characters, the companies, the NPCs, etc,,, it felt more alive
you could push a grandma in skate 3 :(

the climbing!!?? why did they add this and why did they hide some cool spots so high up you need to climb for a couple of minutes and then forget you didn't set a restart point and have to do it again (this is maybe a me problem)

skate with the dot in the name also implies that it is "the skate", the one and only to play,,, which makes me sad because there has been so much lost along the way that makes skate the game it is

last nitpick (sorry!): the reply that plays at the end of score based missions should show your best line (like in skate 3) and not just the last couple of seconds,,, I used to love in skate 3 when I would do a good trick I knew I would get a reply of it

I would've rather paid for this game in return for something that is more finished and feels less like a knock off

to end this rant I wrote at 2am, just play the damn game and enjoy it and if you don't enjoy it then try skate 3 :3
