"Alice's Adventures in Wonderland” by Lewis Carroll has been my favorite kid story for a few years now, it even gave name to one of my fav songs from when I was 14 y.o (ofc Mad Hatter by Melanie Martinez)
I was never a bookworm, but two years ago I decided to buy the book in the original language to challenge myself: it was an opportunity to do something different and to practice my English.
Of course I dropped it at first… but this October I got closer to reading and writing, I decided to try and finish it… and I made it!
I’m gonna be honest, the first chapters didn’t really interest me much, in fact it took me a lot to go on, but since Alice met the Duchess it became very interesting.
Something I appreciated was that it wasn’t difficult to read, it didn’t have a courtly language.
Alice appeared to me as passive, moving around in the weird things happening in Wonderland; it isn’t a bad thing because it was very introspective and showed every thought she had.
The different scenarios changed so quickly that it was almost difficult to follow everything, but it was fun: they were all so bizarre and funny, you could never know what was gonna happen next and after hearing the different characters for the first time I always thought “I can’t wait to meet this character again in the story”, until of course the story ended.
Speaking about the ending, it was so sweet I almost got emotional: I would definitely suggest it to a kid, hoping that it would leave the same beautiful memory I will keep of it.
