the source of meaning

Why Nothing Has Meaning In and Of Itself

Everything around us—you, me, ideas, values—does not carry its meaning within itself. Look at a chair: its meaning (being for sitting) isn't found in the wood and nails themselves; it came from outside them, from its maker's idea of sitting. Look at the word "justice": its meaning doesn't reside in its letters, but in an external moral system from which it derives its significance.

This is the first truth: Dependence. Every being is "needy" by nature. Its existence is not self-sufficient, and its meaning is not complete from within. It is like a blank page that needs someone to write the text upon it.

Why isn't this enough? Why do we need an external source of meaning?

The answer is simple and stark: Because poverty cannot generate wealth, and need cannot create sufficiency.

Imagine a group of very hungry people locked in a room. Hunger is their fundamental state. Can these hungry people satisfy each other? It is impossible to get something from someone who has nothing. If no one from the outside brings them food, their fate is starvation, even if they try to share nothingness.

This is precisely the state of every "needy" entity in the universe. If everything is "deficient" in meaning by itself, then where will meaning come from? How can something give meaning to another when it lacks it itself? The circle will keep turning in a void, and the question will remain: "What is the source of the first meaning?"

The "Self-Sufficient" must exist. Only one being whose existence is from itself, and its meaning is from itself. It does not need an explanation from outside itself; it is the explanation itself. It is the source that—by its mere existence—grants every needy thing a reason to exist and a meaning to be.

From this point, the matter of following this source becomes the only rational decision. If it is the fountainhead of meaning, then where else do we go to seek meaning? And how do we give our lives real weight unless they are connected to what gives them weight in the first place? Ethics here are not restrictions; they are the way one moves from a state of "dependence" to a state of "connection with the source of meaning."
