I've notice this stigma recently of people saying "THATS NOT ROCK" to many female artists when they would regard it as rock if it was their male counter part. I've noticed it a lot with Olivia Rodrigo. Like it or not, her recent music on "Guts" is rock and has rock influences, including her producer who was in an emo rock band. All in all, a good chunk of her music is rock and take influence from many rock genres. Examples: So American- 2000's British rock|All American Bitch- 90's rock| Pretty isn't pretty- 2000's rock| Bad idea right?- 80s rock|. Along with that, she has been vocal about her influences and has invited rock artists on stage with her. So its obvious she knows what she's doing. It feels like her music would be regarded as rock and taken seriously if it was by a man. Because there are male artists making music adjacent to hers and its considered rock. So what's the difference?
People don't like to Acknowledge modern female rock artists because of the fact that people expect rock to be male dominated. Even back then, people didn't wanna admit that Courtney love was writing the music for Hole. So many people were saying that Kurt Cobain wrote the music for "Live through this" when it came out. Then when Kurt died, people said that Billy Corgan was responsible for Hole's hits (Which neither of them weren't). Same with Beabadoobee, people pass off her rock songs on "Our extended play" as not hers because she had a male co writers (Matt Healy and George Daniel, Members of the 1975). And its so stupid because the opposite never happens with Male artists. No one has said "COURTNEY LOVE WROTE NIRVANA'S SONGS" because she was dating Kurt Cobain, but somehow people assumed that Kurt wrote Courtney's music because they couldn't wrap their heads around a female artists writing rock music. So the issue is obviously sexism
If you disregard Olivia Rodrigo and Beabadoobee because they're music is "Pop rock" but you accept Nirvana, The cure, Panic! at the disco, Green Day, or many others then you should please refresh up on rock genres. Because all of the artists on this list have made music that can fit into the pop rock category. Just because an artist isn't making hardcore, grungy, punk rock music, ITS STILL ROCK!!!! The only reason that people "tolerated" Paramore is because their sound was heavier when they started out and then they slowly started to go into a punk/pop rock sound. AND WITH THAT, PEOPLE DON'T LIKE THEIR "NEW SOUND" AND BLAME THE GROUP'S "DOWNFALL" ON HAYLEE WILLIAMS(Its not even her fault, its a former member's fault).
All in all, it feels like there is a level of sexism that comes with how people judge rock music. Because I assure you if a male artist made the music that people say "isn't rock" the same critics would say its the best rock music that's been put out in decades. Along with that, rock is always changing and evolving. Its not going to sound like what it always has sounded like, artists will branch out and involve different sounds. But if you can't accept that an artist is making rock music just because they're a woman, maybe consider getting help.
