Today, a little health tip for all cat lovers.
When our furry friends suddenly have digestive problems, it's... well, let’s just say “uncomfortable” for both sides.
That's why I want to share a time-tested home remedy that has been saving lives for more than 100 years and can also help cats: Moro carrot soup.
Moro Carrot Soup for Cats
A gentle, proven home remedy for diarrhea – when used correctly
When a cat suddenly develops gastrointestinal problems, it can be worrying. Loose stools, frequent litter box trips, reduced appetite... nobody likes to see their little companion feeling unwell.
Moro’s carrot soup is originally a medical classic from human pediatrics. Developed by Professor Ernst Moro over a century ago, this simple recipe – carrots, water, salt – helped save countless children before antibiotics existed. Today, we understand its mechanism and can carefully adapt it for cats.
Why does it work?
Long cooking breaks down the carrots into special sugar molecules, called oligosaccharides. They work like little decoys in the gut:
• harmful bacteria usually cling to the intestinal wall
• the soup’s oligosaccharides act as “fake docking stations”
• bacteria bind to them instead
• and are then gently carried out of the body
This gives the intestines time to rest and recover, without harming the healthy gut flora.
When is it useful?
Helpful for:
• acute, mild diarrhea
• diet changes
• stress situations
• mild digestive irritation
Many cats improve noticeably within a day.
Important difference from humans and dogs
Cats are obligate carnivores.
They must not fast and must not receive only vegetable soup.
Without enough energy, cats are at risk of hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver).
So remember:
Always serve Moro soup to cats together with lean meat
Best choices: chicken or turkey
Recipe (cat-friendly)
Ingredients
• 250 g carrots
• 500 ml water
• ~1.5 g salt (about half a pinch)
• plus finely cooked chicken or turkey
Preparation
-
Peel and chop carrots
-
Cook in water for 90 minutes
-
Blend everything, including cooking water
-
Refill to 500 ml if needed
-
Mix in the meat
-
Serve lukewarm
If your cat has kidney or heart disease, ask your vet before adding salt.
Tip: Freeze leftovers in ice cube trays so you always have some ready.
Feeding guidelines
• ~100–250 ml per day
• divided into 4–6 small servings
• offer fresh water
• improvement often within 24 hours
If your cat isn't eating, don't force it. Offer tiny, fragrant portions and increase the meat.
When to see a vet
Seek veterinary help if:
• diarrhea lasts more than 24 h
• blood or mucus in stool
• severe vomiting
• lethargy or weakness
• kittens, seniors, or sick cats affected
Important:
This soup does not treat giardia or parasites.
Those need proper medication.
Summary
Moro carrot soup is a gentle, natural remedy that can help cats with short-term diarrhea. Prepared properly and combined with lean meat, it supports digestion without stressing the gut further.
Simple, affordable, and trusted for over a century — a little lifesaver for many cats in upset-tummy emergencies.
