Sludge Metal Recommendations

Aight I love sludge, it's my favorite genre as of rn but DAMN there's not that many bands compared to death metal or black metal. Since there's not that many sludge bands out there chances are you'll run into the same few recommendations out there like Iron Monkey, Indian, Thou, Methdrinker, etc. All those bands are fucking great in their own way but this blog is mainly intended for people who already have a little experience with the genre. So like dudes who are already familiar with the bands I've mentioned above and any other ones with a similar level of popularity. Don't expect like a super deep dive into the genre, but if you're looking for more sludge this post might be for you. If this does well maybe I'll post another blog full of recommendations. But anyways here's the list.

1. Abuse

If you like Acid Bath you'll love these guys. They also do a similar thing where they combine sludge with death metal which is always cool. They have a very unique sound in the genre and they're super sick, I'm surprised that they don't get enough attention. Honestly out of all the bands here, you should listen to these guys first, they're fucking amazing. It might take a while to get used to the vocals but honestly once you do you'll really dig it. Honestly I'd recommend them to non-sludge listeners too. If you're a nu-metal fan you'd probably like Abuse too since they have some really good groove in their sound. Sometimes they have a nice pyschedelic section in between which is awesome. They only have two albums and a few demo tapes but you should definitely check them out whenever possible. R.I.P Jeremy Young.
Favorite song: Blankface

2. 1970

A cool ass sludge band from Argentina that has barely any listeners but absolutely deserves more attention cos they're really good. I found this band on metal archives while trying to find some more sludge to check out and yeah this one is definitely a hidden gem. They have some really good riffs and have vocals that I haven't heard being used in sludge. If you heard any rock songs from Argentina, it's a lot like that type of singing. It's pretty cool to see how the culture in different countries have a pretty big influence on the music itself. Which like yeah everyone knows that tends to be the case but still. Overall really cool band that I hope more people check out because these guys are CRIMINALLY underrated.
Favorite song: Cuervos Y Ladrones

3. SLOWHOLE

These guys sound a lot like KEN mode so if you like that band chances are you'll like SLOWHOLE. These guys are pretty new too, their first album released last year as of writing this and I think it shows a lot of potential for any future stuff they put out. They have a bit of a more modern sound when it comes to their hardcore influence but they're SUPER noisy, so noise rock fans would probably fw them. Honestly not much else to say besides that, I'm looking forward to any new releases they'll put out cos I think they sound awesome. Great NOLA sludge band in general.
Favorite song: I'M GOING TO KILL YOU UNTIL YOU DIE

4. Negative Slug

Another cool band that I really like. These guys have a stupid fucking logo I can't lie, it's hard to take them seriously when they have the dumb meme font. Istg don't let that put you off, cos their songs are fucking great. They sound a lot like Grief, EyeHateGod, and Iron Monkey. That era is the golden age of sludge imo and I think if they were around a few decades prior they'd be getting the same level of attention as those bands (except EHG). They're really damn good and they have a pretty unique vibe. Idrk how to explain it and I might just be delusional or stupid, but it gives me the same vibe as bioshock. Anyways cool band, worth checking out.
Favorite song: Coprolalia

5. Ufomammut

Okay hot take, I don't really like atmospheric sludge all that much. I've listened to Cult Of Luna, I've listened to ISIS, I've listened to Neurosis. Nope, I don't really care for it. Don't get me wrong there's some good atmosludge songs and albums out there that I do enjoy, but overall I prefer regular sludge. Now this band is an exception, these guys are fucking amazing. Alright when I tell you, as somebody who does not like atmospheric sludge all that much, that this band is good shit, I fucking mean it. I can't really put my finger on what about them makes them so much more enjoyable than other bands but it's just so good. Really spacey vibe and unlike Cult Of Luna they're not boring as fuck. I didn't give any recommended albums for any of the previous bands listed here but yall NEED to listen to Eve. It's technically just one big song split in 5 but still, it's damn good and the final part is goated. Here's ANOTHER hot take for yall, Ufomammut is the best atmospheric sludge band.
