true blue - star witness (2025)
genre: hypnagogic pop, dance pop
FFO: cecile believe, caroline polacheck
rating: 9/10

this record has everything you would seek from a multidimensional pop artist. true blue is at it again with her gospel choir style vocals, echoing like they're almost softly sung from an abandoned church, that are reminiscent of genre benders Animal Collective and other hypnagogic pop acts, along with her otherworldly production. I'm not sure what type of hand she had in the full on production but I can tell just by elements like the drums and recycled beats from her previous album that she had a hand in this. on this album she works with friends and costars The Bird and LUCY (Cooper B. Handy). I don't have information about these artists but I will link to a helpful article here. I would love to see a m'bladee feature over one of her relaxed and soothing instrumentals accompanied by her dreamlike vocals. favorite tracks: no desire, boom boom, I get the feeling

bassvictim - forever (2025)
genre: indietronica, electropop
FFO: heartcoregirl, the hellp
rating: 6/10

the production on this album feels less fleshed out than Basspunks I and II, though it came out less than a year after Basspunk II. it also feels a little less "clash" and more indie/pop to me. this album feels a little hurried and doesn't blow my mind like the first time I heard bassvictim's Air On a G-String. I know that Maria Manow is a fan/friend of Leo from WorldpeaceDMT(mentioned in one of my earlier blog posts, check 'em out!) and there are nods to their style of funky noise pop/mashup on this current bassvictim album. songs I would recommend: grow up!!!, wolves howling, ike piano, final song

oli xl - lick the lens -- pt. 1 (2025)
genre: uk bass, deconstructed club
FFO: NEW YORK, james k, Floating Points
rating: 9/10

this album really grew on me as i listened to it more. it started off as sounding like an odd amalgamation of neo-industrial deconstructed club, but became a collection of shining steel melodies and stark white production. as pictured I think the album cover fits perfectly. these are hummable tunes with that innovative electronic production that I often seek from modern music. [Nobody does it like Crash Course in Science (1980)] I would call this album palatable but not bland at all! I would recommend the album as a whole it is an experience. there is even an Ecco2k feature.

and now for an oldie cause it can't all be New New

tokow boys - cobra! cobra! (1981)
genre: post punk, new wave
FFO: pylon, neon babies
rating: 8.5/10

this album is an arrangement of powerful yet funky beats intertwined with listenable melodies. my favorite elements include the brass instruments accompanied by plucky guitars. this band hails from france but sometimes sings in english, offering a multi-lingual twist on your typical french, german, or swedish post punk that was being churned out around this time. this is the most laugh-along type music I have heard from the era in a while, though admittedly I have not been seeking it out. I recommend the album as a unit.
