[WEEK 5] treehouse of horror watchthrough!!

as i said in the previous post, we're in the home stretch now! how exciting :) anywho, i'll get more sappy and sentimental in the outro section.. for now, let us recall our ground rules from the first week, and let's just hop right into it for this week!

this week's episodes were...

day 1 - treehouse of horror XXXII

  1. barti: two things, one, another point to the bart and pecora counter (cervidae yet again babeyyy), and two, not to be rude.. however.. they are a little scary.. is that just me...? the deer are a little scary... just like, a little unsettling... anyways..... nancy cartwright i commend your vocal performance bro was looking for mama.. what the fuck am i saying. fine segment, a little scary on accident, let's carry on.

  2. bong joon ho's 'this side of parasite': i should rewatch parasite.. i think on paper it's a pretty funny concept, doing a relatively straightforward parody up until it turns out Everybody is living in the house.. but idk, it's like.. fine lol. i tend not to think about this one? it's not straight up bad, but few jokes really stood out to me either? such is the way i spose..

  3. nightmare on elm tree: it's trees... it's certainly trees.. i think the set up is quite silly! after that i feel like the segment kinda loses momentum for me? i understand because there's technically extra segments in this one, they have to cut a lot for time, but i feel like it really impacted this one in particular. it goes really quick, and with that, some of the humour in this one just doesn't really land for me? the joke about tree rollins is kinda funny? and i remember there being a joke about the funny little shop of horrors plant being a Trans-Plant, which is, cool i guess?? and i don't recall much else. so (-_-;)・・・

  4. poetic interlude: i do enjoy a little style switch up like this! i think it's a fun little interlude idk! it's quite simple, but that's all it really needs to be - it's not a full segment yaknow? also i recently rewatched hit movie brink! (1998) and rewatching this episode, when homer had the waffle with the worms in it i was like omg... just like in brink! (1998)

  5. dead ringer: there have been a few segments in the "modern era" so to speak that reminded me we are in this aforementioned modern day, like lisa pulling out an ipad in school is hell. and this is one of those, but even moreso now.. because now tiktok is part of the plot. which i don't take an issue with for the record, it's just that i've watched only a few episodes from recent-er seasons, so i kinda forget that stuff is on the table? like i was watching an episode from i think season 34?? ish and bart said something something i'm gonna go watch meatcanyon videos now and i was like... oh my god he watches meatcanyon videos..... or that episode from season 36 where they're on a plane and bart has a nintendo switch and i messaged my friends in a hurry being like guys he has purple and green joycons like that is remotely interesting to anybody else besides me? anyways. i like this segment actually! it's an interesting concept, and there's some good spooky moments and jokes! like the spooky phone call being like a business call... had to do one of Those recently because i am an adult unfortunately, so bonus points for personal relevance... (hey i thought you said you were 3!!) also lisa i'm so sorry girl it'll be okay, to quote you in another segment, you'll have friends in college....
notes: generally a pretty middling episode for me? i like the dead ringer segment, but that's most of what i tend to remember alas. such is the way. i like little tinkerbell maggie in the credits also, that's cute! to activate disney's fast play press the b

also! "nothing normal about nefarious, nocturnal, nightmarish, nympho-necromancy-nancy!", "chef boy-yeardleeee", and "harry (i'm vaxxing you) shearer" are all quite silly credits..

day 2 - treehouse of horror XXXIII + not it

  1. the pookadook: i've never seen the babadook fun fact, but whenever i hear about i think of the meme from i think 2016(?) about the babadook being a queer icon because of that incident where netflix accidentally put it in the lgbtq+ stories section. incredible, still funny. hilarious even. anyways, a solid segment! there's not a lot of outright jokes in this one, but i really don't mind, because it's got such an excellently spooky vibe... like there's some real suspense built in this one? even though maggie turns out okay, and even when i first watched this i had a feeling she would be. but it's still like.. idk it's a good tone! the emotional elements hit for me while still being kind of silly, there's some neat animation on marge in couple scenes (like when she's breaking down the basement door), with that, i think the looming shadow of the pookadook is really cool, like... yeah.. it's a good one i don't know what to tell ya man..

  2. death tome: i remember hearing that they were gonna do a death note parody animated in a similar style?? and being, so hyped for it.. like just conceptually that's so cool.. especially knowing they did it with DR studio, who assisted with animating the original anime... awesome actually?? i haven't seen death note, admittedly... (call me a fake emo.... i'll get to it eventually) but i think even if you haven't you'd still get a kick out of this segment! (atleast for me, cause to be fair i have some base knowledge of the original which probably added to the experience, whereas my dad didn't until i told him about it - i think he still liked it though!) anyways, as i said, sick ass concept and neat execution!! i think one could argue this is one of those segments where technically not much happens? i do feel like there is some mildly weird pacing.. but i personally don't mind much at all, and i think the humour and vibe and novelty of this one is so good to me that i still love it :) shoutout to the fake ass english names on the staff list for globo-warm, i assume referencing that old japanese baseball game from back in the day?? incredible... i also really like the voice direction in this! it's got just the right amount of anime dub swag that you can really feel like... immersed i guess?? is the word i'm choosing?? also just like, good emotive voice acting in this one - particularly from yeardley smith and nancy cartwright. also again the anime stylings are so fun, i love little light yagami lisa she's so cute, i love seeing the other springfielders in the background, and, okay to be honest bart looks a little goofy but i find that endearing... damn look at his fckin forehead... i also like the sort of casual integration of modern japanese living in this one? like yeah man, homer's drinking with his boss, when they eat at home they sit on the floor, stuff like that! i know that's kinda baked into the bread when you're adapting an anime like death note, that outside of it's fantastical premise takes place in just, normal japan. but i still thought that was neat. and like.. ough.. yeah.. idk.. i like it lots:))

oh my glorb i just realized that is lowkey how i colour bart's hair FUUUUUC

  3. simpsons world: this one is also fun!! another "less halloween-y" one, but i think it's still a cool premise and like, genuinely kind of unsettling at times? like when homer realizes what/where he is, it's like actually kind of unnerving and you can like feel the distress?? that's good stuff! i like the sound design in this one a lot too, with the sort of eerie synths and the ambient music in the theme park... also lisa's reaction(s) to being a robot are so real me too girl, you'd need to lower my self-awareness meter just a tad for me to be remotely calm about that i think..? anyways, i can imagine some people feeling kind of annoyed at the amount of self-references in this one, which is fair! i feel like i normally would be too? but i don't know, for some reason it doesn't bother me here! i think it's appropriate for the setting, and it's bombastic and silly enough to amuse me, and also i just think it's fun to be able to watch this and go haha i remember that!! also made me (Extra) realize how many iconic scenes there are in seasons 8 and 9 in particular? there might've been like four bits referencing those seasons but.. it's what i noticed.. just a thought for the people.. also the twist with bob's burgers, and the subsequent cartoon worlds is very silly.. i like it.. also slightly amused by spongebob being a little bit of an outlier in that all the other cartoon worlds are for adult oriented shows.. anywho! i like this one too!

  1. not it: okay so admittedly i forgot to watch this the day of, there's a lot going on rn.. it's the next day, so i'm gonna watch it now. brb. okay i'm back, i realized i think i've like, only watched this one other time, and i don't think it was when it aired unless it was... anywho! it's pretty fun! not all of the humour is like my favouritest, but there were still jokes i liked! like moe removing his wig only to reveal his hair is identical.. or "let's go up to heaven and bask in the glory of god's stupid love". i think the concept was also done well! a good combo of silly and spooky.. should i rewatch the original it movie.. i actually didn't watch it back when it released (i watched it a couple years after) even though i know it gained a pretty major fandom, which some of my friends were a part of. i also don't recall if i've seen the sequel.. anywho! also fond of the kinda screwy au style shit going on here.. like all these details that are way off from the simpsons we know, that's so fun! i love little prankster lisa she's not that important of a character in the narrative but i just think she's neat.. amongst other things. also i'm gonna be real with you i laughed when jimbo's face got pie'd off.

notes: okay so i think treehouse of horror xxxiii is one of my favourites, like, ever.. i really like it... i'd say at the very least it's my favourite thoh from the past few years. idk i think a really good tone was set, and the segments all have neat concepts with fun executions (in my personal opinione).. yeah idk! i just like it a lot!! also according to know your meme, turns out the babadook meme technically emerged in december 2016, but got popular in early 2017. so i was pretty close guys... alsoalso when we reached this episode, my dad looked at the roman numerals for a second and then went "thirty-three??" and i went yeah... i know... crazy work..

day 3 - treehouse of horror XXXIV

  1. wild barts can't be token: well. it's nfts... i don't hate this one honestly, i think just the concept brings a like weird gut reaction moreso than the actual execution. cause a snowpiercer type parody is fun! it's just got.. a very peculiar addition, but like, i don't personally read this one as an approval of nfts or anything? they poke a fair bit of fun at the concept.. so.. idk, just my thoughts. besides that, some of the humour didn't really land for me.. but there were some really neat bits of animation (particularly on marge) in this one! i also like her outfit a lot hell yeah.. i dunno, it's fine.

    THAT WAS REAL KYLIE JENNER??

  2. ei8ht: okay so. i really really like this segment, what a neat idea!! i love this like straight up au timeskip type deal. i also just personally love the kids and i love cape feare and like, ough there's so much meat to dig into in this one. it's so interesting! i like the tone in this one too, from the more grounded moments (like lisa trying to get answers from sideshow bob) to the more grim, even absurdly grotesque humour of it all (like the, gore rube goldberg machine??) like, i don't know how to explain but i love this one so bad

however, the twist is. frustrating, frankly. on paper, devoid of societal contexts, i get it, it's cliché but it's kind of interesting and ridiculous enough in a way that could work. but we are not removed from societal contexts, so we're actually just tacking onto the demonization of folks with DID. say "it's not that deep" or whatever; i know the writers didn't intend any harm - most people don't - that's why it's even more of an issue honestly. because it clearly didn't come from a place of hate, it came from a place of ignorance. there are so many stories out there like this, to the degree that people DO genuinely assume shit like this about those with DID. and this isn't the simpsons' first go round with this trope, we had the multiplisa-ty segment (which was based on split) from a few years back. but i would hope things would be, atleast a little different this time? they acknowledge it's a common trope, and they don't have the weird dramatic effort when she switches? i guess. but like, man. i don't know, i guess it's just extra disappointing with the recency (not that the first time was cool either.) and on a personal note, just how great this segment is otherwise.

i've had a couple years to be frustrated so. i will now try to wrap it up in a compliment sandwich for levity's sake. i like the animation on lisa's alter, it's very expressive! i like maggie bein involved that's very silly, i like her hairstyle and i like that she inexplicably still has her pacifier for, posterity i guess?? and i like 'he is an englishman' coming back around for sideshow bob's murder. (getting murdered that is. not, a murder he committed. gotta clarify that) even through the frustration, there's some good stuff in here. so, that's something.

  3. lout break: this is, a segment. it's like fine. some bits are amusing or neat. like when ned is in church and starts transforming, that had some neat suspense. or hank azaria's delivery on some of professor frink's lines, quite amusing as always. otherwise like.. meh. the concept and a fair bit of the humour in this one is not really for me. nothing is necessarily outright bad. it's just kinda middling. idk.
notes: it's odd, i don't rewatch this one often (partially because it's also fairly new, in regards to thoh episodes) but like.. idk, there's bits i like a lot? i feel like, overall, this ones got a weird bell curve in likeability for me. like the first one is alright! i LOVE the second one (except for. the one bit) and then the last one is so meh to me. not that i've never had differing opinions on segments in an episode (i mean. i've made a few of these posts now, so i'm sure you could find another example), i guess i just don't know if there's been one with such a difference between them? such is the way i suppose.

day 4 - treehouse of horror XXXV + simpsons wicked this way comes

  1. the information rage: conceptually interesting i think! commentary on the current state of politics (specifically further polarization) but it's kaijus and bart and lisa fight them with mechs?? kind of awesome?? i do find the execution like, a little hamfisted, i know that's the most basic and kind of annoying take about any media with an explicitly political message, but i don't know, that's how it felt to me personally. if you've seen this one and have further thoughts let me know! cause i don't disagree with the main thesis here!! like, yeah?? we should be able to commune together and bring positive and effective change, real shit i think we can all agree on that in principle. i guess just like, idk some of the dialogue was a little awkward in general? and some of the humour was on-the-nose in a way that just didn't really grab me? which is weird, i feel like i'm normally amused by that sorta thing. again, let me know your thoughts if you'd like to share, these are just mine.

  2. the fall of the house of monty: i have just learned that this was actually written for thanksgiving of horror! that makes sense.. anyways, this one's neat! it's got an interesting concept and some very cool moments and details! i like the sepia tone and noise filters over the whole thing, i like the old fashioned setting, the ghost designs are SICK?? they're so cool like yo... with that said, i don't recall a lot of jokes or standout moments besides the overall coolness? which is whatever to be honest! i feel like this is one of those that'll earn more lustre to me as i rewatch it...

  3. denim: i should watch venom that seems like a fun movie... this concept is, kind of beautifully stupid in a way i like. it's. jeans. it's venom but jeans. the stop motion over top of the 2D animation is really cool! and like, kind of a neat way to illustrate the other worldliness of the symbiote i mean pants. otherwise, not my favouritest one humour-wise? some jokes tickled me, like homer getting back together (so to speak) with denim instead of marge.. but i don't know, not much else comes to mind? it wasn't actively unfunny to me by any means, just like, even of the jokes i can recall and liked conceptually, i felt like in execution they went on a little too long or, like, idk just something didn't quite land for me. 'tis how it goes i spose.. (BARS??)

  1. first story: i i don't know what to title these they don't have names... i like this one! again, arguably a "not much happens" one, but i don't mind. i like the 1950s setting a lot! i don't know if that was picked just for fun or if this is based on anythingUPDATE i looked it up it's based on "the screaming woman" story from the radio drama 'suspense', and that story in particular aired in 1949.. so that's why! cool! anywho, i like the little jokes where characters have like, current technological thinking with older technology.. like milhouse losing all his high scores on his ball and cup.. that's silly. i also enjoyed the little hints that could actually lead an audience member to figure out what had happened (well, i suppose luann trying to put bart to sleep was a pretty big hint, but you get the idea), all around a fun one!

  2. second story: yet another epic sci-fi moment here on treehouse of horror... it's fun! i like this concept, and i think there's some funny bits! like human chalmers and skinner being aghast at the first name basis thing.. also i liked how the kids all inexplicably wear polo shirts what's happening there... unsure but it's funny.. otherwise not much to add! it's a solid segment!

  3. third story: i love this concept?? a silly but still topical rendition of fahrenheit 451... i love the sound design in this one?? the cool synths and shit are so up my alley. i think also the look of this society is quite interesting, it's got like, that glossy early 2000s star wars swag to it? i think it fits! also while, again, very silly, it also brings up some points i actually quite like. like, i'm no hater of dense media where there's a lot to dig into, i see the appeal! but there also should be space for "dumb" media. i think there's value in that - shit that's just fun to watch. like, one of my favourite movies is kick-ass. it's not the most depthful film, not even close honestly, it's just fun! but i also do enjoy things i can really dig into, like everything everywhere all at once, which has so much to say, about families, about life, about existence, etc. like it's beautiful.. but also it plays around, it gets goofy and cool and shit! i like a balance like that, personally. heck, even the simpsons works as an example. sometimes it's very earnest and emotional, and sometimes it leans purely comedic. and that's fine! i mean. even here, talking about this silly segment, i'm ascribing a lot of meaning to it and talking about wider media consumption.. but you also don't need to do that, you can just enjoy a thing too! does this. make sense. i don't know. i think super eyepatch wolf conveys this point better in his videos about riverdale, if that interests you. sometimes "dumb" stuff is fun... also there are some light jabs at modern cinema that really tickled me, like the show the family is watching being lit so dimly they have to squint. idk, anyways! it's good! also shoutout to the beauty of oral history.

notes: i love a guest animator moment! oh shit i forgot to mention that one by the ren and stimpy guy didn't i. i told you i didn't proofread that last post... anyways. this one (thoh xxxv) is by jorge r. gutierrez! it's so energetic and there's a book of life cameo of sorts!! very cool :D i should rewatch book of life that's a good movie.. and i like the illustrated man's tattoos framing in swtwc, that's fun!

"FIVE NIGHTS AT FRINKY'S"??

day 5 - free day!

free day to build suspense.. and also just have a break because as much fun as it is to watch these each day, i'm getting, so busy, ough...

update i injured myself making a bagel this morning and a bug emerged from i think a bean bag and unleashed itself into my room, unsure what to do about this

DAN AND PHIL UPLAOD

day 6 - treehouse of horror XXXVI

  1. america the beautiful: wikipedia lists this one as a segment so i'm gonnSICKOS???? THE SICKOS GUY?? STAN KELLY OF THE ONION??

  2. the last days of crisco: okay i'm not gonna lie to you i couldn't hear like half the dialogue in this one due to the environment within which i was watching this one, but it seemed funny! i liked little bart in his little matching cowboy outfit with homer :(( when he appeared onscreen my girlfriend leaned over and went aw! and i was like... yeah... andOHHMYGODHE GOT DRAINED. also yeah don't pour oil down the drain fr. in foods in high school, we poured it into a can we had designated to be for leftover oil, and once it turned more solid overtime we could just toss it in the garbage/compost if you have one of those.

  3. clown night with the devil: this ones based on late night with the devil!! that's sick!! i haven't seen that movie at this point, but i'd like to! i love lydia lisa and steve urkel bart that's not important but i love them. 'nother point to the counter, boys. you know which one. anyways, i also didn't hear most of the dialogue in this one alas lmao.. but i also got the impression it was funny! i think the concept is very neat.. and.. yuh.. i like just watched it i can only have so many thoughts on it this is just how my brain works i'm sorry..

  4. plastic world: 3D SIMPONS SO SCRYAY AHHHHH, anyways, interesting idea! i think the 3D models to convey the plastic material is actually a very cool idea and really works here. it's just funny to poke fun at the mildly unnerving 3D simpsons characters, but again, i think it works in treehouse of horror! the animation in this one really sticks out to me? like maybe even the "2D" sections are actually in 3D? it's interesting! not super sure if i love it at this point, but again i've only watched this one once and recently, so with rewatches i can form more of an opinion. but it's neat i think! also seeing the kwik-e-mart after a while is neat, i know my girlfriend was also quite intrigued by that. THE MAGGIES. the way my friends and i all gasped when the first maggie appeared.. and then all stared at the tv mouth agape when it was revealed there's a whole society of maggies... bit funny...
notes: this ones new... as you may have inferred.. so these are just my initial thoughts! which might change as i continue to rewatch this and such.. i got to watch this one with my friends on halloween also :) so that was fun! who did you dress as?? if you wish to share... i went as amber sweet from repo! the genetic opera because i'm [gay] like that.. i also had a casual costume (in a way?) for school because i didn't wanna do all that at 8 am in the morning.. which was. nagito komaeda. anyways. happy halloween!

and that's all for this year's treehouse of horror re-watch extravaganza!

sorry it took me a bit to post this! i got, quite busy in the last week of october.. so i didn't get around to finishing up my writing here until now! anywho, thank you so much for joining me on this month-long journey! i'm so glad you could be a part of my little tradition this year. i'm also very glad i could be joined by my dad this year, as well as my friends on occasion! i love the simpsons, and i love treehouse of horror, and i'm so glad i could share this even more with you all! thank you. despite the, frankly very stressful and kind of fucked up month october 2025 was for me and my loved ones?? i'm glad i had this to look forward to each day. and i very much intend on continuing this tradition (albeit, i don't know if i'll blog about it actively next year.. this was a lot of work and it'd probably just be the same points over and over again lol), but yeah! if i somehow got you to watch one of these episodes, that's awesome! hope you liked it! or atleast found it funny! not sure what else to add here.. just, thank you again, for joining me this year! i'll see you around.. have a great day! and i hope november treats you well ~☆
