Lots of people tends to say you cannot be goth and christian but the truth is yes you can. Gothic comes from catholicism.ย
Originially,ย โGothicโ meant majestic, spiritual, and sacred.ย
The Gothic style first appeared in Catholic Europe in the 12th centuryย especially in France. It began with the Catholic Churchโs architecture, not anything โdarkโ or โspooky.โ
Everything about Gothic design was meant to lead souls to worship.
Centuries later, during the Enlightenment and Renaissance, people began mocking the Gothic style, calling it โbarbaricโ and โmedieval.โ The term โGothicโ itself came from the Goths. A tribe viewed as uncivilized.
Then, in the 18thโ19th centuries, the โGothic revivalโ began in art and literature (think of cathedrals, castles, and ghost stories). People romanticized the mysterious, spiritual, and emotional aspects of medieval Catholicism โ which evolved into Gothic fiction (like Frankenstein, Dracula, etc.).
In the 80's, it became a subculture. Some people mocked christianity through it, others embraced it.
Gothic began as Catholic.
It was the Churchโs way to make earth feel like Heaven through art, architecture, and light.
Over time, people secularized it, keeping the beauty and mystery but forgetting its sacred purpose.
So yes you can be gothic and christian because it comes from christianity.ย
God bless y'allย โฅ
