Hey guys! My name is Ashton, I’ve decided to create some blogs to help you guys and sorta be like a pseudo older brother for the things I wish my older siblings taught me. Now I have a lot of friends in uni and I’d say I’m doing pretty well in it so here’s some helpful tips for surviving your first year:
1. Attend orientation
I can’t stress this enough, if you’re nervous about making friends so is literally everyone else starting with you. At orientation literally just go up to some new students and say hi, they’re all nervous too. The more people you talk to the more likely you are to find people you’re gonna be in class with.
2. Join clubs/societies
Same reason as attending orientation honestly, but you’ll find people with the same interests as you and since you’re all at the club they’ll probably want to make friends too
3. Learn the names of the people who are in your classes
I know in big lecture halls you can’t exactly learn everyone’s name but it’s good to get yourself talking to the people around you, learn their names and say hi to them when you pass them in the halls.
4. For your assignments: make a list of things you need to compete/study
The other tips I’ve given are more social based but this is definitely academic, I didn’t do that well in high school so I had to learn these things in uni. Essentially once you get your assignment/exam date make a list of things you need to do and what you need to revise, this is to make sure you don’t forget anything you need to do. Bonus if you add little things to do that’ll give you extra credit
5. Keep a monthly planner for everything you need to do and schedule like your life depends on it.
Google docs, books, notes on your laptop I don’t care, as long as you have some way to plan out your study sessions and assignments you’re golden. I know this seems tedious but it’s honestly one of the things I’ve found the most helpful, I keep a monthly planner book and pencil in pretty much anything I could do that month.
Anyway, let me know if this helped, thanks for reading!
